抄録 | Korean Buddhist monks engaged in spiritual cultivation strive towards the Son,a meditative cultivation, rather than the the Kyo,a doctrinal learning which is seen as subordinate. This first became evident in the 16th century writings of Hyujong. Hyujong pointed out that while Kyo seeks the wordless truth, its very doctrinal nature subverts the quest for wordlessness. Son,on the other hand, does not rely on words or texts, and has taken on the role of greatest importance in Korean Buddhist thought. |
