抄録 | In spite of all that has been said and done to reduce "nirguna Brahman" to "surya" in certain quarters, "sunyata" cannot be regarded as a substitute of "Brahman". The asymmetry in both these traditions regarding their ideas of enlightenment, freedom,et cetera needs special mention in views of the persistent tendency to undermine this typical asymmetry. The altruistic element is not entirely absent, for example,in the ideal of the "jivanmukta" in Vedanta but this element becomes fully explicit in the "Bodhisattra" ideal of Buddhism. The most important difference, however,is that "moksa" or liberation is denounced in favor of an altruistic form of life in the "Bodhisattra" ideal which is further devoid of any commitment to the absolutistic ontology of "Brahman". The article highlights this difference apart from highlighting the ethical aspect of freedom in Indian thought in general, both in Vedante and Buddhism, where both "jivanmukta" and "Bodhisattva" are supposed to work for the benefit of mankind as a whole. |
