抄録English Abstract
In the middle age of Japan, our ancestors handed down a lot of Buddhist tales such as the Hosshinshu,Senjusho,Kankyonotomo,Shasekishu. These are called 'Bukkyo Setsuwa' in Japanese. It seems to be possible for us to find out the spiritual characters of the ancient Japanese in these tales. In this short paper,I will focus on two interesting features of the ancient Japanese spirit.

One is the relationship between rain and deeds of people. In Nara period, our ancestors seemed to think that the rainfall must be controlled by the deity of rain and that our deeds had nothing to do with it. People could do nothing but pray for the deity in case of dry weather. But,after Heian period, people came to think that their evil deeds were cause of a dry weather,or drought. Therefore, this is the case of the Eizon's disciples, people gathered and kept the Eight Precepts for three days and practiced the good deeds. They came to consider their deeds to the main cause of dry weather.

Another feature is of the power of the precept. We can find out the remarkable instances of that the people obeying the Eight Precepts were gathered at the prayer meeting to exorcise the Moko enemy. Eizon performed the ceremony of prayer at the Otokoyama Hachimangu against the enemy, and there the lay people called Chosaishu kept the Eight Precepts everyday. We can find out several references to the Precepts have the special and concrete powers in the Buddhist tales.

As mentioned above, the Buddhist tales suggest the many interesting features of the ancient Japanese spirit.
