This paper takes the Buddhist transcripts found in Turpan, Dunhuang for instance to approach the subject from two angles. As far as the interpretation and transcription of the Buddhist sutras was concerned, there was already the formal procedure that was strictly obeyed, and the persons in charge of the mission should be very religious and good at handwriting. On the other hand, the calligraphy styles varied in copying the different scriptures, i.e. in the Tang dynasty the original Buddhist sutras were to be copied in Chinese regular script, while the transcription of the notes and commentaries, interpretations and comments by the people of the same time usually in running and cursive script. This paper also makes an analysis of the reasons for what above. |
