抄録 | This revised Indian edition of a study earlier published in Stuttgart (Franz Steiner Verlag, 2001; Alt‐ und Neu‐Indische Studien 53, 1 and 53, 2) is Indological philology of the highest caliber. Balcerowicz, a leading scholar of Jain philosophy, presents a critical edition and English translation of one of the foundational texts of Jain epistemology, Siddhasena's Nyāyāvatāra (which he dates to between 620 and 800 CE), along with the first commentary on it, inline imageearly tenth‐century CE inline image. His edition is based primarily on four manuscripts from Patan, as well as two previous printed versions. He includes in his notes portions of Devabhadra's c. 1150 CE inline image. Balcerowicz observes in his introduction that the Nyāyāvatāra“opens… a new era in the history of Jaina epistemology,” because the author brings the theories of the Buddhists inline imageand Dharmak?rti into Jain philosophy. At the same time, in terms of any contribution to the fields of logic and epistemology in India, more generally, “the work seems to lose its flavour of originality and novelty.” Despite this caveat, this impressive publication is an important contribution to both Jain studies and the history of Indian philosophy. |
