抄録This article is an annotated Japanese translation of Yuktidīpikā (author unknown, ca. 680–720). As Frauwallner pointed out, Yuktidīpikā is a unique work which deals with the doctrines of the classical Sāṃkhya in great detail and is the most important source for comprehending the system of the classical Sāṃkhya. The main subject of the portion which we translate here (YD 87,18–97,17) is the inference theory of the Sāṃkhya. This portion corresponds to the commentary on SK 6ab: “Those [objects] which are beyond the cognizance of senses, on the other hand, are established on the basis of the [inference by which] one cognizes [the object to be proved] through the commonality.” The author of YD, commenting on SK 6ab, asserts the Sāṃkhya’s original theories such as the three kinds of inference: (a) inference through the commonality (sāmānyatodṛṣṭa), (b) inference of an effect from its cause (pūrvavat) and (c) inference of a cause from its effect (śeṣavat) and their distinction. He also asserts the Sāṃkhya’s definitions of the direct and indirect proofs and the necessities and definitions of the 10 components of proof: (1) desire to know (jijñāsā), (2) doubt (saṃśaya), (3) purpose (prayojana), (4) securement of possibility (śakyaprāpti), (5) removal of doubt (saṃśayavyudāsa), (6) thesis (pratijñā), (7) logical reason (hetu), (8) example (drṣṭānta), (9) adaptation (upasaṃhāra) and (10) conclusion (nigamana). From the viewpoint of the Sāṃkhya, the author of YD engages in debates on these issues with the opponents. One of the opponents is assumed to be a Buddhist, most likely Dignaga, because in YD one can find passages related with those in the chapter 3 of PSV. In translating the texts of YD, we followed the readings of Wezler– Motegi[1998] in principle, while in several other parts, we proposed alternatives or emendations in footnotes if necessary.
This study aims to not only appropriately understand the Sāṃkhya’s system of logic along with its context but also examine and analyze aspects of the polemics between the Sāṃkhya and the Buddhist logicians. When we attempt to trace the origin of the Sāṃkhya’s system of logic described in SK or YD, the key text is the Ṣaṣṭitantra written by one of the ancient Sāṃkhya teachers, Vārṣagaṇya Frauwallner enumerates the following characteristics of S. T: (1) Vārṣagaṇya considered inference to be the superior means of cognition as compared to perception, (2) he developed the system of logic and epistemology without being influenced by the Naiyayika or Buddhist logicians, (3) he classified sāmānyatodrṣṭa into two kinds, and regarded only seṣavat as non-deviant and (4) he incorporated indirect proof into his system of logic and accepted it as valid. These tendencies are inherited by the author of YD. To clarify the philosophical and historical background of YD and serve the convenience of readers, we listed the Sanskrit fragments of S. T that are found in PSV, PST. or YD in Appendix (a). In selecting the fragments, we generally followed Frauwallner[1958], thereby adding the locations of parallel passages in NAA or YD. We also collected other texts that are considered to be associated with YD or S.T in Appendix (b).
