抄録 | This paper examines issues regarding the nidāna (anecdotal story about a text’s origin) and the authentication of the texts known as Abhidhamma within Theravada Buddhism. This study presents the following findings: ⑴ Theravada commentaries stipulate that in contrast to the Sutta Piṭaka which provides only a single-faceted analysis of all existence, the Abhidhamma literature analyzes all existence and manifests the omniscience of the Buddha. It is relevant that the adherents of Theravada Buddhism, ¯ like those of Sarvastiv āda, consider the Abhidhamma literature to be the highest of the Buddha’s ¯ teachings. ⑵ However, differences between the teachings of the Buddha as contained in the Abhidhamma literature and those in the Sutta Piṭaka give rise to two questions that appeared in the Theravada ¯ commentaries. Q1: Did the Abhidhamma literature truly exist during the time of the Buddha? Q2: Why is no explanation present in the preface with regard to when and where the Buddha preached the Abhidhamma literature? ⑶ In response to these questions, Theravada commentators assert the following in an attempt to ¯ show that the Abhidhamma literature indeed represents the teachings of the Buddha. A1: The term Abhidhamma appears in the Sutta Piṭaka and Vinaya Piṭaka, and therefore it was already in existence around the time of Buddha. A2: The nidana of Abhidhamma literature has been implicitly passed down in the Theravada tradition. ⑷ However, these responses are not sufficient to show that the Abhidhamma literature as handed down within Theravada presents the teachings of the Buddha. First, A1 alone does not prove ¯ that Theravada’s Abhidhamma literature existed during the time of the Buddha, because the word Abhidhamma (or Abhidharma) is present in other schools of Buddhism. Secondly, A2 does not conclusively address Q2 because the nidana of Abhidhamma literature, not being included in the authoritative TiPiṭaka, plays a mere anecdotal role within the Theravada tradition. ⑸ Thus, it is concluded that although Theravada Buddhism may claim that the Abhidhamma literature is the highest of Buddhist teachings, its authority is built on an extremely unstable foundation. |
