불교의 역사는 붓다의 깨달음을 시원으로 한다. 수행자 고타마는 번뇌가 모두 사라진 누진지(漏盡智)를 얻어 아라한이 되면서 붓다가 되었다. 깨달음을 얻은 후 붓다는 때가 덜 묻은 동시대의 많은 사람들의 안녕과 행복을 위해서 가르침을 폈다. 그 결과, 45년 동안 출가(出家)와 재가(在家)의 제자들이 각자의 능력과 노력에 의해서 믿음과 지혜를 얻어 유익함을 경험했다.
붓다는 전문적인 수행승 집단인 출가승단을 만들었으며, 승단의 구성원들이 출가의 목적인 궁극의 경지 아라한과에 이르도록 이끌었다. 그리고 일반 사회인들을 지속적으로 교화해나가면서 사회 참여의 모습을 보였다. 본고는 재가자의 교화를 통한 붓다의 사회 참여에 대한 고찰의 성격을 지니고 있다.
붓다는 일반 재가자들에게 그들이 실천할 수 있는 만큼의 가르침을 제시하였다. 세속에서의 행복을 추구하는 이들에게는 정당한 방법으로 그러한 행복을 추구할 것을 제시하였다. 국왕은 국왕으로서 법에 의한 통치를 해야 한다고 역설하였고, 일반 재가자들은 열심히 노력해서 재산을 모으고, 그 재산은 자신과 남들과 함께 공유하면서 현세의 행복한 삶을 살라고 제안하였다. 사회 구성원들 사이의 상호 의무를 제시하면서 구성원간의 존중과 상호 돌봄의 정신을 일깨워 주었다. 보시와 도덕적인 생활로서의 지계(持戒)를 강조하고, 자비희사(慈悲喜捨) 등의 명상을 통해 천상에 이르는 수행법도 강조하였다. 궁극적으로는 재가자들도 무상(無常)을 이해하는 지혜를 갖추어 예류과 이상의 성인의 깨달음에 이르게 하였다. 오욕락이 있는 재가자도 출세간법을 증득할 수 있는 기회가 있음을 알고 지도하였던 것이다. 이처럼 붓다는 세간에 살아가는 재가자들이 각자가 누릴 수 있는 현세의 행복과 내세의 행복 그리고 궁극의 행복을 제시함으로써 적극적으로 사회 참여를 하였다.
The history of Buddhism began with Gotama the Buddha’s enlightenment. The ascetic Gotama became a Buddha by attaining the knowledge of destruction of defilements(āsavakkhaya-ñāṇa) which is a quality of arahant. After his enlightenment, the Buddha taught his liberating teachings to his contemporaries who could understand his teachings for their welfare and happiness (hitasukha). As a result, many disciples, renunciant monks and nuns, and lay people experienced benefits through their faith and wisdom according to their abilities and efforts.
Gotama the Buddha established a professional sangha community and led the members of sangha to the ultimate goal, ahahantship. He also continuously participated in social engagement by means of teaching to lay people. In this article, I try to demonstrate how the Buddha did his social engagement through his activity of teaching and transforming lay people.
The Buddha taught his lay disciples as much as they could practice in their life. When lay people wanted worldly happiness, he inspired and suggested them the proper way of achieving this kind of happiness. He strongly stressed governing a country by the righteous Dharma of the king. He suggested lay people should gather their wealth by ardent effort, and also to share it with other people to live happy lives in this world. He recommended co-duty to members of society, opened their eyes to regarding and caring each other. He emphasized generosity(dāna), moral precept(sīla), and meditation practices which lead to heavenly states(brahmavihāra) like loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity. Ultimately, lay disciples were taught to get noble enlightenment at least steam-entry(sotappatti) through understanding the impermanence of the phenomena. He led the lay disciples who had sensual desire because they also had the chance to travel the World-transcending(lokuttara) path.
In this manner, Gotama the Buddha engaged in positive social engagement to suggest worldly happiness, fortunate rebirth and ultimate happiness to his lay disciples according to their situation and abilities. |
