| 抄録 | 조사선의 사상적인 바탕은 본래성불에 근거한다. 모든 사람은 본래부터 깨달은 존재 라는 말이다. 따라서 그 수행과 깨침의 성격은 인도선법과 구별된다. 인도선법의 경우 점차적인 수행을 통해서 그 결과 궁극적으로 깨침에 도달한다는 것으로 선수후증(先修 後證)이라면 조사선의 경우 수행과 깨침의 선후를 분리하지 않는 수증일여(修證一如)의 입장이다. 깨침의 경우에도 그 성격은 번뇌의 공성이 자각된 상황으로서 그것이 다름 아닌 지혜의 터득이고, 평등과 청정으로 표현되는 분별상과 집착심의 초월이며, 자신이 자신을 제도하는 것이라는 점 등이다. 깨침의 기능은 그 개인적인 경험을 토대로 하여 반드시 스승으로부터 확인을 받는 인가, 그리고 정법안장을 계승하고 출세의 자격을 부여하는 전법, 나아가서 보살도를 실천하는 교화의 행위, 그리고 그 표출로서 스승과 제자 혹은 납자들 사이에서 행해지는 선문답을 비롯하여 그 행위에 대한 기록의 결과 남겨지는 것이 선어록으로 등장하였다.
그 깨침의 특징으로 언급되는 것에는 다양한 경우가 있다. 본래면목의 자각, 거듭나는 행위, 지속적인 효용, 일상적인 생활, 보편적인 적용, 초월된 현재, 몸과 마음의 일여(一如), 깨침의 경험에 대한 확신, 지혜의 완성, 그리고 깨침이 성취된 경우에 그 작용이 영속적인가, 속성이 보편적인가, 경험이 일회성인가 하는 문제도 대두된다. 더욱이 깨침의 속성이 보편적이라면 사람 이외의 존재에게도 동일하게 적용되는가, 깨침의 작용이 영속적이라면 깨달은 이후의 수행은 어떤 수행인가, 깨침의 경험이 일회성이라면 수회에 걸친 경험들은 어떤 경험인가 하는 갖가지 문제를 논의할 경우에도 기본적으로 깨침의 성격과 기능이 전제되어 있다.
The ground of the Patriarch-zen thoughts is the doctrine of ‘original enlightenment’. The practice and enlightenment are united in thoughts of original enlightenment.
So, the characteristic of enlightenment in Patriarch-zen is enlightenment of sunyata-nature. To put it concretely, the mind of enlightenment in Patriarch-zen is indiscretion-mind and nonfixed-idea. Here we find a new meaning: indiscretion-mind is equality mind, nonfixed-idea is pure mind and enlightenment is of self-discipline.
And the functions of enlightenment in Patriarch-zen are; yinke (印可 . zen master’s acknowledgement of the disciple’s enlightenment experience), and the transmission (傳法) of The Eye Store-house of the True Dharma, i. e. the highest supreme Dharma expounded by the Buddha on Vulture Peak (正法眼藏) and zen analects (禪語錄). In particular, yinke played more important role than enlightenment experience itself, and the transmission of Dharma played more important role than Yinke. The transmission of Dharma put zen analects into practice for disciples and sentient beings.
The special features of enlightenment in Patriarch-zen are; enlightenment of one̕s orignal mind, the act of coming to life again, the persistent virtue, the pure mind in life, the universal application, the transcendental present time, the unity of body and mind, the confidence in enlightenment experience, and the completion of wisdom etc.
There are other questions: the enlightenment in Patriarch-zen is perpetual or momentary? Is it one time-experience or is it repeated? Is its effect universal or limited? etc. After all, enlightenment in Patriarch-zen is hard to define in a word.
We have only to judge from the existing state of things. |
