| 抄録 | 지금까지 경량부 연구는 上座 슈리라타(Śrīlāta)를 도외시한 채 ‘세친=경량부’(혹은 ‘경량부=세친’)라는 전제하에 『구사론>상에 인용된 단편적인 경량부 설을 중심으로 하여 이루어져왔다. 이에 따라 경량부 정체와 관련된 온갖 구구한 추측성의 가설이 제기되었다. 그러나 이러한 제 가설에 따르는 한경량부가 불교4대학파의 하나였다는 사실도, 상좌를 경량부로 이해한 『구사론』의 제주석서, 비판서인 『순정리론』, 혹은 『유가사지론』 등의 초기 유가행파의 논서와 제 주석서도 부정해야 할 뿐만 아니라 경량부 관련 불교사상사의복원 또한 불가능하다.
‘세친=경량부’ 설은 사실상 결정적 근거가 없는 출처불명의 정보이다. 세친이 ‘경량부’, 혹은 ‘경량부 일파’로 일컬어진 것은 그가 상좌일파와 가까이하였기 때문이다. 그런데 어느 날 상좌 슈리라타의 경량부가 불교사에서 사라져버렸다. 그는 불교사에서 완전히 잊어진 존재가 되었다. 근대불교학이 시작된 이후에도 탐구의 대상이 되지 못하였고, 그의 자리를 세친이 대신하였다. 이는 미스터리이다. 그럼으로써 경량부에 관한 온갖 상상과 추측성의 가설이난무하게 되었다.
경량부의 상좌 슈리라타는 설일체유부와 유가행파를 대표하는 논사였던 중현과 무착과 시대(4-5세기) 동일한 지역(아유타국)에서 활동하였고, 흥미롭게도 세친은 이들 3인과 불가분의 관계였다. 상좌는 유부와 유가행파의 가장강력한 비판자였고, 이들 역시 동일한 논거로써 경량부의 종자설을 비판하였다. 따라서 이들 네 논사의 親疎의 갈등 관계는 어떤 식으로든 그들 논서 상에반영되고 있다.
우리는 초기 유가행파의 논서 상에서 상좌 즉 경량부에 대한 그들의 대립과긴장을 읽을 수 있다. 또한 유가행파로의 전향 이후 과거 자신의 학설을 비판해야 하였던 —그것도 자신을 비판하였던 중현과 동일한 논리로써 — 세친의딜레마나 아이러니도 읽을 수 있다. 우리는 이제 상좌를 통해 경량부와 관련된 거의 모든 지식과 가설을 반성 재고해보지 않으면 안 된다. 그는 분명 우리의 불교이해를 새롭게 할 것이다. 우리는 어쩌면 상좌를 통해 불교학의 새로운 카테고리를 설정해야 할지도 모른다.
Studies on Sautrāntika until now have been done mostly with segmentary statements or theories of Sautrāntika which are quoted in Abhidharmakośaśātra, on the condition that ‘Vasubandhu is Sautrāntika’ or ‘Sautrāntika is Vasubandhu’, and disregarded Sthavira Śrīlāta. Thus various speculative hypotheses have been raised concerning the Sautrāntika. However, as far as following these hypotheses, the fact that Sautrāntika was one of four major schools of Buddhist, and commentaries of Abhidharmakośaśāstra, Nyāyānusāraśāstra, or early Yogācāra’s text and commentaries all of which understood Sthavira as Sautrāntika has to be denied. Moreover it’s impossible to restore the history of Buddhist thought regarding Sautrāntika.
The theory that ‘Vasubandhu is Sautrāntika’ is actually the knowledge without decisive grounds, apocryphal. The reason why Vasubandhu was called Sautrāntika or a follower(pākṣika) of Sautrāntika was because of familiar with Sthavira. Then on one day, Sautrāntika of Sthavira Śrīlāta was disappeared in Buddhist history. He became thoroughly forgotten. He hasn't been researched in modern Buddhology also, and Vasubandhu took his place. This is mysterious. But, this is why all the imaginations and speculative hypotheses of Sautrāntika have been rampant.
Sthavira Śrīlāta of Sautrāntika was in the same area(Ayodhyā), same era(4-5C.) with Saṃghabhadra and Asaṅga, a representative of Sarvāstivādin and Yogācāra. Interestingly Vasubandhu was in a inseparable relationship with these three. Sthavira was strong critic against Sarvāstivādin and Yogācāra, and they also criticised the Sautrāntika’s theory such as the theory of seeds(bīja) using almost same reasons. So their relationship and conflicts are reflected in their texts in anyway.
We can read the tension of Asaṅga and the others in the early Yogācāra’s texts. We also can read the irony or dilemma of Vasubandhu which he has to criticize his own early theories using almost same reasons of what Saṃghabhadra used after his conversion to Yogācāra.
Now we should reflect on all knowledge hypotheses related to Sautrāntika, through Sthavira Śrīlāta. He will surely renew our understanding on Buddhism. Following these, we might have to establish a new category in Buddhology. |
