| 抄録 | 본 연구는 70년대를 기점으로 하여 지난 40여년을 10년 단위로 시기를 나누어 그동안 한국인에 의하여 서술된 논문 및 저술, 번역을 대상으로 밀교/티베트불교에 대한 연구현황과 과제를 살펴본 것이다.
밀교라는 용어조차 생소하였던 70년대에는 소수의 논문과 저술이 밀교에 대해 소개하고 그 실상으로 접근하기 위한 노력을 기울였다. 이어 80년대에는 주로 밀교의 사상사적인 면과 의례적인 면에 대한 연구가 주류를 이루며 한국의 불교사에서 드러난 밀교적 현상에 대한 파악이 급선무가 되었다.
90년대는 밀교연구의 1세대를 지나 2세대가 출현하는 시기로 80년대 이전에 비해 논문이 증가하고 있다. 주로 한국의 밀교사와 의례에 집중되었던 지난 시기에 비해 연구주제도 대폭 확대되어 본격적인 중기밀교에 관한 교학적인 연구가 진행되었다. 특히 진언에 관한 체계적인 연구시도가 있었으며, 미술사학과 연계된 도상학이 눈에 띠고, 티베트불교도 이 시기에 본격적으로 시작되었다.
2000년 이후는 밀교/티베트불교를 연구하는 학자의 수가 전기에 비해 대폭적으로 증가하면서 다양한 분야에 걸쳐서 연구가 진행되었다. 고려대장경에 포함된 다수의 밀교경전이 햇빛을 보게 되었고, 풍부해진 자료를 토대로 왕성한 연구성과가 나오게 되었다. 그리고 전 시기에 미약했던 티베트불교에 대한 연구가 제 궤도를 찾으면서 다양한 방면으로 연구주제가 확산되었다.
이상과 같이 살펴본 밀교/티베트불교의 연구현황과 성과를 토대로 향후에 연구해야 할 과제는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 밀교의 저변확대를 위한 실천적 접근이 필요하다. 밀교는 대승의 교학을 몸으로 체험하고자 하는 실천수행의 입장이 강하다. 밀교와 티베트불교가 갖고 있는 독특한 수행법은 학자들의 연구에 의하여 속속 그 베일을 벗고 공유되면서 수많은 연구주제를 제공할 것이다.
둘째, 교학의 정립을 위한 이론적 접근이 필요하다. 지역마다 특성을 보이는 밀교 가운데 일본의 空海에 의한 진언교학과 티베트의 쫑카파에 의한 티베트밀교 교학에 대하여 대승의 교학과 연계한 체계적 밀교 교학을 정립하고자 하는 이론적 접근이 필요하다.
셋째, 밀교의 역사 및 사상사에 대한 타당성 있는 이해를 이루려고 하는 시도가 있었음에 못지않게 구체적으로 밀교의 역사에서 누락된 부분에 대하여 상기시키는 작업이 진행되어야 한다.
넷째, 밀교/티베트와 인접분야 학문 간의 융합이 보다 체계적으로 진행될 필요가 있다. 밀교는 현상과 관련된 내용이 풍부하고, 이것은 곧바로 圖像學, 美術史學, 言語學, 書誌學, 佛敎醫學 등의 인접 분야와 연결되고 있다. 밀교/티베트와 여러 학문 간의 융합이 구체적 계획 아래 질서 있게 시도되어야 할 것이다.
It has been 40 years since modern research was conducted on this particular subject. This study was conducted by dividing the time period in 10 years respectively after 1970’s, based on published thesis, articles and translated texts in Korean, relevant to esoteric Buddhism and Tibetan Buddhism.
It was after 1960’s, more accurately in 1970’s when there were a few researches done on esoteric Buddhism. In 1980’s, the research focused on history of thoughts and ceremonial aspect of Esoteric Buddhism. However, this required understanding of how Esoteric Buddhism influenced on Buddhism in Korea.
It was in 1990’s, when 2nd generation of research on Esoteric Buddhism appeared. Thus, the volume of articles and Ph.D thesis increased more than in 1980’s. Compared with 1980’s where the research focused mainly on the history and ceremony of Esoteric Buddhism, the scope of research was largely expanded, where a concrete research on the mid-Esoteric Buddhism. In particular, there was a systematic research on mantra and iconology, in connection with art history. Research on Tibetan Buddhism started in this period.
Since 2000 year, as a number of researches studying on Esoteric/Tibetan Buddhism increased, researches were carried out in many different fields. After the 1st phase of translating Tripitaka of Chinese into Korean was complete, a number of Esoteric Buddhism scriptures were translated. Also, more theological approach was adopted for understanding the philosophy of Esoteric Buddhism.
Base on the researches of aforementioned Esoteric/Tibetan Buddhism, the following researches can be carried out in future. Firstly, it needs to establish a practical approach to wide-spread the understanding of Esoteric Buddhism. Esoteric Buddhism emphasizes practicing asceticism with our physical body, based on the teachings of Mahayana Buddhism. Therefore, it is required to further research on asceticism methodology which is unique in Esoteric/Tibetan Buddhism.
Secondly, it is required to apply theoretical approach in formulating philosophy. Thus, it is necessary to try a theoretical approach in establishing a systematic Esoteric Teaching, in connection with Mahayana Teachings.
Thirdly, it is required to understand the history and thoughts of Esoteric Buddhism. Also, it needs to restore those that are omitted in the history of Esoteric Buddhism.
Fourthly, it needs to systematically integrate teachings with Esoteric/Tibetan Buddhism, such as iconology, art history, linguistics, Buddhist Medicine, etc. |
