| 抄録 | 한국에서 불교와 여성 연구가 본격적으로 촉발된 것은 1980년대의 일이다. 그 후로 한세대의 기간 동안 불교와 여성에 관한 다양한 연구성과가 축적되어 왔다. 가장 많은 논문이 발표된 주제는 ‘불교의 여성관’이었으며, 가장 성차별적인 불교교설로는 팔경법과 여성성불 불가설이 지목되었다. 불교와 페미니즘의 관계에 있어서는 상호 비교 분석되기도 하였고, 불교의 ‘본래’ 입장이 페미니즘의 한계를 보완할 것이라는 불교우위의 견해도 제기되었다. 여성주의적 관점에서 불교문화를 비판, 재해석한 연구는 가장 취약한 분야임에도 몇몇 의미있는 시도가 이루어지기도 했다.
최근 10년간 한국의 불교와 여성 연구는 주로 근현대 한국 비구니 조명에 편중되었다. 그리고 남성 불교학자들의 연구가 증가하였고, 불교여성의 현실을 보다 구체적으로 고찰한 연구도 늘어난 점 등을 특징으로 들 수 있다. 한편, 국내 연구 현황이 너무 원론적인 문제에 집중되어온 것에 반하여, 서구의 연구 경향은 사상적 문제보다 세계 여러 지역의 불교여성의 역사와 현실을 이해하는 것에 집중되어 있어, 앞으로 국내 연구에서도 이 부분에 대한 보충이 필요하다고 본다.
한국의 불교와 여성연구는 다양한 연구방법론의 도입과 활발한 학제간 연구로 전개되어 왔다. 불교학의 한 분과학문을 넘어 보다 확대 발전될 수 있는 전망을 갖고 있다. 하지만 여전히 부족한 면은 여성 관련 불교원전의 연구, 그리고 동아시아적 맥락과 연결하여 한국을 보는 시야, 티벳, 동남아 등 세계 지역에 대한 연구적 관심 확대 그리고 불교해석 전통에 대한 여성주의적 도전 등의 과제가 제기된다.
The investigation of how to view women in Korean Buddhism appeared to start during 1920's and 1930's but the research paper of Prof. Young-Ja Lee read for the foundation seminar of Korean Association of Women's Studies in the year of 1985 was the real opening in this field.
The subject discussed the most frequently was the Buddhist view of women. Eight rules for nuns in Buddhism and dispute about female enlightenment have often been pointed out as the most gender discriminative doctrines of the Buddhism. Eight rules for bhikkunis has been seriously dealt with in Korea. The topic of women's enlightenment has been continuously argued.
Studies have been focusing too much on issues of principle in Korea while the history and current status of Buddhist women around the world have been covered in the western school of Buddhism. This may imply where the research works are likely to be headed in Korea.
The relation between the Buddhism and feminism was examined in various aspects. Their similarities were analyzed; the view that the Buddhist 'original' position would complement feminist limitations was introduced. The most progressive achievement was the critical approach to the Buddhist culture and its reinterpretation from the feminist perspective, which is not easy to find in Korea.
In the past ten years, the study of the Buddhism and women in Korea primarily concentrated on the research of modern and
contemporary Korean bhikkunis. Other features we can notice are increasing papers by male scholars and conservative interpretations often found. It is believed positive that there have been more studies of Korean female Buddhists' present situation with the application of anthropological research method and that the history of Korean female Buddhists' different achievement has been discovered.
It is still regrettable not to be able to meet much research on original Buddhist script related with women. There also needs to be broader view to connect Korean text with that of entire East Asia. It may desirably lead studies to regional expansion such as Tibet or South-East Asia. To see the studies of the Buddhism and women further develop as a branch of the Buddhist studies, it is suggested to include different research methods and active interdisciplinary studies.
