| 抄録 | 통합종단 출범 이래 50년간 대한불교조계종은 교육과 포교, 역경을 종단의 공식적인 3대사업으로 추진하고 있다. 교육사업은 승려교육을, 포교사업은 도시포교와 기복불교의 탈피를, 역경사업은 경전의 한글화를 목적으로 하고 있다. 통합종단 출범 시 승려교육은 정상적인 교육과 수행을 받지 못한 승려들의 유입으로 자질 향상과 정체성 부여가 중요한 과제였다. 포교는 산중불교와 기복불교에 머무르며 미신으로까지 치부되고 있는 상황이었기에 도심사찰의 창건과 신도의 교육이 급선무였다. 그리고 역경은 경전들이 한문으로 이루어져 있어서 경전의 한글화가 시급하였다. 이와 같은 3대사업의 목적은 불교의 현대화로 집약 표현될 수 있다. 통합종단의 비구측은 불교의 현대화를 위하여 3대사업을 열정과 의지로 추진하였으나 최근에 이르기까지 재정의 부족 등으로 인하여 순조롭지는 못하였다. 승려교육사업은 조선시대 강원교육체제를 큰 변화 없이 유지하다가 2010년에 승가대학 표준교과과정을 마련하여 현대화를 시작한 단계이다. 포교사업은 도시포교와 기복불교의 탈피를 통한 현대화를 추구하였지만 기복불교는 여전하고 기독교에 비하여 도시에서 불교의 약세는 여전하다. 다만 역경사업에 있어서만은 동국역 경원이 36년에 걸쳐 한글대장경을 완간하여 경전의 한글화를 달성하고 현재는 개역작업을 진행하고 있다. 통합종단의 3대사업을 불교의 현대화라는 목적 측면에서 평가하면 역경사업은 소기의 목적을 달성하였으나 교육사업과 포교사업은 소기의 진전을 이루지 못한 것으로 판단된다.
The Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism has implemented three major projects, namely, education, preaching mission and Buddhist translation for 50 years since the launching of its united order. The education project aims at venerable education, the preaching mission project aims to preach Buddhism to urban areas and to shed the practice of praying only for good fortune, and the Buddhist translation project aims to translate the Sūtras into Korean. When the united order was launched, the venerable education had to improve those monks who were not properly trained and disciplined so as to establish their identity distinctively. The preaching mission had to construct temples in urban areas as well as educate believers because Buddhism was being practiced as Buddhism only in mountains and Buddhism only for praying for good fortune, which was even seen as shamanism. Also, the Buddhist translation project had to translate the Chinese-written Sūtras into Korean. The purpose of these three major projects can be epitomized by the modernization of Buddhism. Buddhist priests of the united order pursued the three major projects for the modernization of Buddhism with passion and dedication, but their efforts have not been so successful because of a lack of finance. The venerable education had maintained the education system of Joseon College of Monastics without major change until 2010 when the order prepared standard curricula of Saṅgha University, paving the way for modernization of Buddhism. The preaching mission sought to modernize Buddhism through preaching in urban areas and shedding the practice of praying only for good fortune, but the power of Buddhism is still weaker than that of
Christianity in urban areas. Only the Buddhist translation project has been successful: Dongguk Translation Institute has completed the publication of the Hangul Tripitaka for 36 years, thus achieving the Korean versions of the Sūtras, and they are now being revised. When the united order's three major projects are evaluated in terms of modernization of Buddhism, the Buddhist translation project achieved its goals, but the venerable education and preaching mission projects have not achieved their goals. |
