| 抄録 | 袈裟는 鉢盂와 더불어 불교의 승단문화를 나타내는 대표적인 상징이다. 한국불교 역시 이러한 袈裟傳統을 가지고 있다. 그런데 한국의 전통가사에는 다른 나라의 불교문화와는 변별되는 특징적인 문양이 가미되어 있어 주의가 요구된다.
한국 전통가사의 특징은 天王紋貼과 日月光紋이다. 그런데 천왕문첩과 같은 경우 그것이 한국 전통가사에서만 살펴지는 것이기는 하지만, ‘貼’이라는 자체는 인도불교가사에서부터 연유한다. 그러므로 이를 한국 전통가사만의 특징으로 규정하기에는 부족한 면이 있다. 이에 반해서, 일월광문과 같은 경우는 한국 전통가사에서만 살펴지는 특수한 문양이다.
한국 전통가사의 일월광문에는 ‘단독 일월광’과 ‘불교 우주론 일월광’의 두 가지 계통이 존재한다. 그리고 이러한 두 계통의 일월광문은 다시금 각기 方形과 圓形의 형태적인 차이를 내포하고 있다.
이를 바탕으로 일월광문의 형태적인 차이와 내포의미를 고찰해 봄으로 인하여, 우리는 불교 우주론 일월광이 단독 일월광에 선행하는 가치라는 점. 그리고 방형이 원형에 비해서 시기적으로 먼저 파생한 것일 수 있다는 점에 관해 인식해 보게 된다.
이와 같은 일월광문의 변화는, 불교 우주론에 대한 관점에서 점차 日月로만 한정되는 양상으로 변화가 이루어졌다는 것을 알 수 있다. 이는 불교 우주론에 대한 타당성이 약해지면서 일월의 중요도가 보다 부각되었음을 의미한다. 이는 일월광문이라는 명칭과 더불어, 한국 전통가사의 일월광문을 이해하는데 있어 매우 중요한 측면이라고 하겠다.
일월광문의 내용적인 특징을 정리하면, 먼저 단독 일월광은 불교 우주론 일월광에서 독립된 것으로 불교 우주론 일월광의 내용이해에 포함된다. 다음으로 불교 우주론 일월광은, 軸山인 須彌山을 중심으로 하는 수미산 우주론을 바탕으로 3차원적인 가치를 내포하고 있다. 여기에 梵字를 통해서 作法적인 가치까지도 포함하는 종합적인 曼茶羅를 지향한다고 하겠다. 즉, 한국 전통가사의 특징인 일월광문은 密敎의 이상경계인 만다라의 現示를 상징하는 것이다. 이는 현실 속에서 理想境界를 구현하려는 대승불교의, ‘상징을 통한 現示’
라고 하겠다.
Along with pātra (monk's bowl), kaṣāya(monk's robe) is a typical symbol of Buddhist monk culture. Korean Buddhism also has such a robe tradition. But Korean traditional kaṣāya includes peculiar patterns which are fairly different from those of other countries.
A characteristic of Korean traditional kaṣāya is the ilwolgwangmun(solar/lunar beam pattern) and the cheonwangmuncheop (天王紋貼). Even though the cheonwangmuncheop is found only in Korean kaṣāya, the cheop(貼) itself is originated from Indian Buddhist kaṣāya. Therefore, it is hard to consider it as a characteristic of Korean kaṣāya. Meanwhile, the ilwolgwangmun is a pattern that is found only in Korean kaṣāya.
The ilwolgwangmun in traditional Korean kaṣāya has two patterns: 'simple solar/lunar beam' and 'solar/lunar beam of Buddhist cosmology.' And both patterns of ilwolgwangmun have also square type and round type respectively.
Based on this, we can check the configurative difference and the implication of ilwolgwangmun to find out that the solar/lunar beam of Buddhist cosmology precedes that of simple one and that the square one may go before the round one.
As such, the pattern in ilwolgwangmun tended to be changed from the Buddhist cosmology to just the solar/lunar beam gradually. It means that, while the validity of Buddhist cosmology got weakened, the importance of sun and moon was more emphasized. Along with the name of ilwolgwangmun, it is a very important as
pect in understanding the pattern in Korean kaṣāya.
The characteristic contents of ilwolgwangmun can be summarized as follows: First, the simple solar/lunar beam is originated from the one in Buddhist cosmology and so includes the understanding of solar/lunar beam in Buddhist cosmology. Next, the solar/lunar beam in Buddhist cosmology comprehends the 3-dimensional value based on the cosmology of Mt. Sumeru the principal mountain of Buddhism. It contains the intension to aim at the comprehensive maṇḍala which includes even the compositional values in the Sanskrit letters. In other words, the ilwolgwangmun which is one of characteristics in traditional Korean kaṣāya symbolizes the manifestation of maṇḍala the ideal boundary of esoteric Buddhism. It can be called 'the manifestation through the symbol' of Mahayana Buddhism which tries to realize the ideal boundary in the actual world.
