| 抄録 | 범종의 타종횟수는 전통적으로 새벽에 33회와 저녁에 28회 치는 것으로 전승되고 있다. 이는 寺刹과 鐘樓에서 공히 통용되는 것이다. 이 중 28과 관련해서는 이것이 28宿를 상징한다는 것에 별다른 이론이 없다. 그러나 새벽의 타종횟수인 33에 관해서는 전통적으로 불교와 관련된 두 가지 설이 제기되고 있어 혼란을 보이고 있다.
그 첫째는 윤회의 세계 분류인 6道의 총합이 33(지옥+아귀+축생+인간+아수라+28종의 신들)이라는 점에 의해서 33이라는 숫자가 윤회의 全體群像을 가리킨다는 것이다. 이는 불교의 세계관에 있어서 수직적인 부분을 차지한다는 점에서 28수의 수평적인 측면과 더해져 높은 설득력을 확보하게 된다. 그러나 이와 같은 주장은 28天 중에서 ‘色界 18天의 수가 전승에 따라서 다르다는 것’과 ‘아수라를 제외한 5道說도 존재’하고 있어 前5道와 28天을 더한 33의 조합에는 불확실성의 문제가 내포되게 된다.
다음으로 둘째는 33이 地居世主[天帝]인 인드라가 사는 도리천을 상징한다는 것이다. 이는 붓다께서 도리천의 인드라 正殿에서 설법하신다는 『華嚴經』의 내용을 통해서, 붓다의 존엄성과 중생구제라는 설법적인 당위성이 성립될 수 있는 부분이다. 그런데 33의 타종횟수와 관련하여, 불국사에는 이를 가름할 수 있는 중요한 건축물과 기록이 전하고 있어 주의가 요구된다. 현재 泛影樓로 되어 있는 須彌梵鐘閣이 바로 그것인데, 이와 관련된 유물적인 측면은 둘째의 경우를 방증하고 있다. 이는 본 문제에 대한 판단을 가능케 한다. 즉, 범종의 저녁 타종횟수인 33은 수미범종각과 관련되어 도리천에 붓다를 모시는 불교적인 法式과 일치하며, 이를 통한 法門의 두루한 중생교화 울림을 상징한다고 할 수가 있는 것이다.
붓다의 위대성은 타자에 대한 구제의 실천에 있다. 이를 사찰 안에서 잘 상징하고 있는 것이 梵鐘이며, 그 소리는 곧 梵音이 된다. 33의 타종횟수에는 바로 이러한 불교적인 상징성이 내포되어 있는 것이다.
The temple bell has been passed down to toll 33 times at dawn and 28 times at evening in tradition. It is same in both of temples and bell towers. Among them, 28 is acknowledged to have relation with 28 constellations with little objection. But, for 33 the tolling number at dawn, traditionally there have been two theories in Buddhism, causing a confusion.
First, as 33 is the sum of 6 provinces in the samsara (hell + preta + beast + human being + Asura + 28 kinds of gods), it means the total living groups of the samsara. In the Buddhist world view, it takes the vertical part while the number 28 takes the horizontal part. In this respect, it is highly convincing. But this assertion that 33 is the combination of former 5 provinces and 28 heavens contains some uncertainty because ‘the number of 18 heavens in the rūpa-dhātu is different by traditions’ and ‘there is the 5 provinces theory except Asura.’
Next, 33 is told to symbolize the Trāyastriṃśa which is the living place of Indra the Lord of the Earth[Heavenly Lord]. Its validity as Dharma on Buddha’s dignity and salvation of people can be supported by telling that Buddha preached at the Indra’s temple in Trāyastriṃśa.
By the way, there is an important building along with a related record in Bulguksa, which is noteworthy because it can give us a hint on the tolling number of 33. It is the Sumer Bell Tower named ‘beomyeongnu(泛影樓)’ in the present. The relic evidences related with it are supporting the second case. It enables us to make decision on the problem. That is, the 33 evening tolls of the temple bell match with the Buddhist courtesy to invite Buddha to Trāyastriṃśa in relation with the Sumer Bell Tower. It can be said that the tolls are symbolizing the reverberation of enlightenment for general people around the sacred gate.
The greatness of Buddha lies in the practice of salvation for others. What is well symbolizing it in the temple is the bell, and its toll becomes the sound of truth. The 33 tolls of bell contains this kind of Buddhist symbolism. |
