| 抄録 | 붓다의 탄생을 전해 주고 있는 문헌은 풍부하다. 이런 문헌들은 붓다의 사후 상당한 시간이 경과한 후 형성된 것들이다. 팔리어 문헌에 국한하여 시기별로 붓다의 탄생을 말하는 문헌들을 비평적으로 고찰하여 각각의 불전들이 전달하고자 했던 의미를 찾아보고자 하였다. 시기별로 탄생 전설의 내용이 조금씩 발전하여 간 과정을 볼 수 있다. 이러한 변화는 붓다라는 한 위대한 스승에 대한 존경의 심도가 깊어짐에 따라 발생한 것이다. 그러나 한편으로 붓다의 종교적인 정각이라는 한 가지 핵심은 변화하지 않고 계승되고 있다.
붓다의 탄생 전설은 두 가지 골조로 구성되어 있다. 첫째 골조는 보살의 탄생을 고대 인도의 신화에 근거하여 설명한 것이고 둘째 골조는 붓다의 정각을 염두에 두고 형성한 것이다. 첫째 골조는 인드라 등 각종 브라흐만교의 신들을 엮어 브라흐만교가 섬기는 신보다 붓다가 더 위대하다는 것을 보인 것이다. 둘째 골조엔 탄생게가 핵심이 되는데 이것은 붓다의 정각을 대변한 것이다. 붓다의 정각은 중생을 위한 이타행과 직결된다. 두 가지 골조 모두 보살의 육체적 탄생과 붓다의 영적 탄생을 찬양하기 위한 장치이다. 불교도들은 이런 장치로 불교도들에게 붓다의 탄생 의의를 전달하고자 하였다.
There are mythological or supernatural accounts in the texts on the birth story of the Buddha. They are beyond our common sense and logical reasoning so that they are dismissed easily by people whose mind is science-oriented. How to interpret these mythological elements in the birth story of the Buddha determines how to understand the Buddha. If you take them literally, you can see the Buddha as supernatural being or God. In contrast, if you find them false, you can see the Buddha as an ordinary human being just like anyone else in the world.
The texts which narrate the Buddha's birth story is to be best understood by finding out the meanings hidden in the supernatural accounts. Buddhists up to now would find the true meanings by reading the texts on the Buddha's birth. Mythological accounts are not based upon what actually happened to the Bodhisatta at his birth but are devices to convey the message to listeners who listen to the birth story.
This work concentrates on the structure of the birth story, and on the meaning imbedded in that structure. There are a lot of texts relating to the Buddha's birth among which the Pali texts is oldest. As time progresses, supernatural elements or mystic accounts become more elaborated and added in to the later literature even though we find some of them in the oldest scripture in Pali.
The birth story utilizes the pre-existing mythology in Brahmanism and reflects the Buddha's Enlightenment. Deities in the Veda are employed in the texts in order to serve the baby Buddha. This intents to say that the Buddha or his teachings are much better than Bramanism. According to the birth story, when the Bodhisatta is born he announces that he will attain the Enlightenment for the sake of the welfare of the living beings in the world. Without considering the event of the Enlightenment, there would be no proper understanding of the birth story. The birth story is based on the accounts of the Buddha's enlightenment; the story of the Bodhisatta's physical birth is a reflection of the account of the Buddha's enlightenmen |
