抄録In this writings, Won-hyo's Thought of Ecology was described mainly. Thought of Ecology was divided into Ecological Philosophy and Ecological Ethics according to the aspect of theory and practice. And as logical premise, his thought of Buddhism was sketched.
Won-hyo's Thought of Buddhism depends greatly on Thought of Tathāgata-garbha which is representative thought of Mahāyāna Buddhism. Among these, the stem of his thoughts was Chinese Thought of Buddha-Nature(budda-dhātu) which Late Thought of Tathāgata-garbha in India moved to China, and was added to Chinese thought of Hua-yan based on The Mahāyāna-śraddhotpāda-śāstra. Won-hyo's distinct thought of Buddhism is Thought of One-Mind, I think, which is highlight of Korean Thought of Buddhism and Method of Harmonization. Thought of One-Mind is his main thoughts that embraces sacredness and secularity and Existence and non-Existence, and Method of Harmonization is his auxiliary thoughts that back Thought of One-Mind up logically.
In Won-hyo's Ecological Philosophy, his attitude of mind to nature is described. Through the declaration, "The Triple World is only one mind", we could take the message that human and nature have some relation. And through his explanation on One-Mind and Dharmakāya, we could have the thought that human and nature is all One-Body at the aspect of owing same principle. In Won-hyo's saying that the boundary of Sattva which has Buddha-Nature(budda-dhātu) reach to animal or plant which is major member of ecosystem, we could know that the relation between human and nature is not vertical upper-and-lower relation of directions and obedience but horizontal equal relation of mutual cooperation. And in Won-hyo's Commentary on the Mahāyāna-śraddhotpāda-śāstra and Expository Notes on the Mahāyāna-śraddhotpāda-śāstra, we could acquire the knowledge that the relation between human and nature is the relation of harmonization and mutual fusion.
The root of Won-hyo's Ecological Ethics is the conscious of One-Body between human and nature which could attain by various Buddhist training. On the basis of this conscious of One-Body, he asserted his motto of Benefitting Sattva, and performed his Public Buddhist Movement. He planted the mind of grace, Buddha's basic attitude, to every one so that the mind of grace was spread to neighbor, social, nation, human, animal, and plant. Won-hyo enlightened us that there is a message of "Don't kill animal!" through his explanation about the Precept of ahimsā, one of concrete ecological ethics articles. According to this message, animals include directly, and plants and things include indirectly in the range of ahimsā. Through this message, we could comprehend profoundly how we treat nature.
