| 抄録 | 원효의 정토시 2편이 현재 전해오고 있다. 『미타증성게』와 『징성가』이다. 전자는 보조지눌의 저서 『절요』 속에 인용되어 있으며, 후자는 원묘요세의 비문에 인용되어 있다. 동일 저자의 작품에다가, 주제 역시 정토왕생을 노래하고 있기에 이 두 작품의 관계에 대해서 다양한 견해가 제시되어 왔다.
김상현은 동일한 작품으로 보면서, 『징성가』까지 『미타증성게』로 부르고 말았다. 동일한 텍스트의 전반에 『미타증성게』 부분이 있었고 후반에 『징성가』 부분이 있는데, 그 사이에 빠져 있는 부분이 있다고 추측하였다. 아마도 그것은 극락정토의 모습을 찬탄하는 내용일 것이라고 보았다.
이에 반하여 한태식(보광)은 두 작품이 별개의 작품이라 주장하였다. 그 논거로는 원묘요세가 임종 전에 외고 있었다는 점에서, 『징성가』는 임종 때 하는 염불을 위하여 저술된 것으로 보았다. 그러나 이는 활용의 한 사례를 가지고, 시간을 소급해서 저술의 목적인 것처럼 보았다는 점에서 오류인 것으로 생각된다.
나는 두 작품이 다른 텍스트일 가능성이 더 높다고 본다. 그 이유는 두 작품이 그 성격과 사상적 배경에서 다르기 때문이다. 『미타증성게』는 『무량수경』에 근거하여 아미타불의 성불과 제도중생을 찬탄하는 노래임에 반하여, 『징성가』는 『관무량수경』에 근거하여 ‘나무아미타불’의 칭명염불이 아미타불의 본원에 따르는 행법임을 중생들에게 권유하는 내용으로 서로 차이가 있기 때문이다.
Two poems about Pure Land(淨土)are written by Wonhyo(元曉:617-686): A Verse on Amita Buddha’s Enlightenment(彌陀證性偈) and A Verse on Pure Nature(澄性歌). The former is cited in Jeoryo(節要) of Bojo Chinul(普照知訥:1158-1210), and the latter is cited in the inscription of Wonmyo Yose(了世:1163-1245) by Choi Ja(崔滋).
Kim Sang-hyun(金相鉉:1947-2013) defined A Verse on Pure Nature as a part of A Verse on Amita Buddha’s Enlightenment, treating as the same piece of work. He did not acknowledge the originality of A Verse on Pure Nature and assumed that there was a missing content, the commemoration of Pure Land could have been stated in between each poems.
On the other hand, Han Tae-sik(Bo-kwang) argues that A Verse on Amita Buddha’s Enlightenment and A Verse on Pure Nature are each individual works. A Verse on Pure Nature was described as a chanting for funeral ritual because Wonmyo Yose chanted it before his own death. However, I pointed out that it is an error relying on single example to interpret the actual purpose of the poem.
I interpreted the two poems have their own originality in the character and philosophical background. A Verse on Amita Buddha’s Enligthenment is a poem praising Amita Buddha’s enlightenment and salvation for every sentient beings based on the thoughts of Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtra. In the meanwhile, A Verse on Pure Nature is a poem praising Amita Buddha’s enlightenment and salvation for every sentient beings and persuading them to rebirth in the Pure Land(Sukhāvatī) by chanting ‘Namo Amitābha’ that was instructed in the Sūtra of Contemplation on the Buddha of Immeasurable Life.
