| 抄録 | 초기불전에서 tṛṣṇā(渴愛)는 대표적인 번뇌로 언급된다. 갈애는 심리적인 집착으로 인해 괴로움을 초래하므로 괴로움의 원인으로 설명될 뿐 아니라, 사성제에서는 集諦(duḥkkha-samudaya)로 규정되어 윤회적 생존(bhava, 有)의 원인으로 지목되었다. 또한 십이연기에서는 無明(avidyā)과 더불어 윤회의 직접적인 원인으로 간주되고 있다. 따라서 초기불전에서 갈애는 전적으로 부정되고 끊어야 할 번뇌로 인식된다.
한편 이러한 갈애의 용례를 법화경에서 검토해 보면 갈애 용례에 변화가 있음을 알 수 있다. 그러한 용법의 변화는 두 가지로 정리할 수 있다.
첫째, 초기불교의 이래의 용례를 수용하고 있다. 이는 법화경에 사성제와 십이연기가 설해지고 있다는 것으로부터 확인 가능하다. 이때의 갈애는 명백하게 부정되어야 할 번뇌이다. 둘째, 갈애를 긍정하는 용례가 확인된다. 「여래수량품」에서 중생이 붓다를 향해 일으키는 갈애는 적극 장려된다. 또한 「신해품」에서는 ‘붓다(=아버지)의 갈애’라는 주목할 만한 표현이 확인된다. 이로부터 법화경에 갈애에 대해 부정과 긍정이라는 두 가지 용법이 있음을 인정된다.
동일한 경전 내에서 갈애라는 단일한 개념에 대해 부정과 긍정이라는 두 가지 입장을 취하고 있는 상황에 대해 본고에서는 다음과 같이 이해하였다. 갈애라는 대표적인 번뇌가 견불과 정법의 청문이라는 결과로 이어진다는 것은 곧 법화경에서 번뇌와 보리가 다르지 않음을 단적으로 드러내고 있는 것으로 추측하였다. tṛṣṇā 이외에 열망을 나타내는 용어가 다수 존재함에도 불구하고 이 용어가 사용된 것은 의도적이라고 생각되기 때문이다. 또한 붓다의 갈애라는 표현은 중생에 대한 붓다의 자비를 비유적으로 나타냄과 동시에, 붓다의 상주교화라는 본경의 메시지를 드러냄에 있어서 갈애가 심리적 계기가 됨을 표현하고 있는 것이 아닐까 추측하였다.
In Early Buddhist Sutras, the Craving(tṛṣṇā, 渴愛) is referred to as a representative defilement. The Craving causes suffering owing to the psychological obsession and for this reason it is explained as a reason for the suffering. Besides, in the Four Noble Truths, the Craving is regarded as the truth of the source of suffering(duḥkkha-samudaya) that originates samsaric existence. Also in the twelve links of dependent arising(12緣起), the Ignorance(avidyā) and the Craving are defined as a direct cause of Samsara. Therefore in Early Buddhist Sutras, the Craving is being denied and also recognized as an defilement which needs to be extinguished.
Meanwhile, the usage of the Craving changes from one of Mahayana Buddhist Sutras, the Lotus Sutra. The change in the usage of the Craving could be explained in two ways.
First, the usage of the Craving seems to be accepting that of the Early Buddhist understanding. The evidence could be found in the Four Noble Truths and the 12 Nidanas appear in the Lotus Sutra. The Craving mentioned in here is an obviously denied defilement.
Second, the usage of the Craving is being affirmed in the Lotus Sūtra. In the Chapter on Duration of Life of the Tathāgata, people raise their Cravings toward the Buddha and then they could meet and listen the rightful-teaching (saddharma) from the Buddha in the Nirvana state. Also in the Chapter on the Disposition, a metaphorical expression of father and son relationship appears within a noticeable expression ‘The Craving of the Buddha(father).’ From here I could recognize both negative and positive usages of the Craving in the Lotus Sutra.
In the identical Sutra, the Craving which is a singular concept has taken up both positive and negative points. This could be explained likewise. The connection between the Craving and results of seeing the Buddha and listening of the Buddha teaching, represents that the Defilement(煩惱) and the Buddhahood(菩提) have no difference in the Lotus Sutra. Even though there exists various terms designating a craving and a desire, however tṛṣṇā is used in the Lotus Sutra with a purpose. Also the expression ‘The Craving of the Buddha’, metaphorically represents the mercy of the Buddha towards people. At the same time I assume that the Craving is expressed with a psychological motivation to reveal the message of the Lotus Sutra, the eternal existence of the Buddha and its teachings.
