| 抄録 | 불교교단은 출가와 재가의 이중구조로 이루어져 있다. 바람직한 출가자는 어떠해야 하며, 또 바람직한 재가자는 어떠해야 할 것인가? 이를 야나기 무네요시(柳宗悅)의 저서 『나무아미타불』 제17장에서 다루고 있는 일본 정토불교의 세 분 조사의 삶을 참고로 하여 다시금 논의하였다.
출가의 모범은 붓다의 법대로 살아가는 것이다. 이러한 모범적 사례를 우리는 일본 정토종의 개조 호넨(法然)에게서 찾아볼 수 있다. 그는 민중들에게 염불을 널리 권하면서도 계율을 굳건히 지켰다.
그렇지만, 계율을 잘 지키는 것만으로 승려의 행위를 다 했다고 만족할 수 없었던 경우도 있다. 집을 떠난 것이 승려이지만, 절마저 버리고 모든 것을 버려야 한다고 생각했던 경우이다. 바로 시종(時宗)의 개조 잇펜(一遍)이 그렇다. 집도 버리고 절도 버리고서, 민중들에게 널리 염불을 권하기 위하여 유행(遊行)을 했다. 이는 승려의 기준을 더욱 더 높인 것으로 볼 수 있다. 내가 그를 ‘초승(超僧)’이라 부른 까닭이다.
한편, 재가의 경우에는 애당초 출가였다가 파계를 통하여 비승이 됨으로써 재가로 편입된 경우도 있다. 이는 비승비속이라 할 수 있는데, 정토진종의 개조 신란(親鸞)이 그러했다. 그는 스스로 비승비속이라는 자각을 깊이 하였다. 그러면서 비승비속 역시 구원받을 수 있는 길을 찾아갔다. 이러한 비승비속에 대하여, 가네코 다이에이(金子大榮)는 비승이기에 더욱더 비속이어야 했다고 해석한 바 있다.
내면적으로 비속이기만 하다면 외형적으로 승이든지 아니면 비승이든지 무관할 수 있다는 것이다. 이러한 관점은 내면을 기준으로 한 평가이지만, 재가자에게는 비승이라고 해서 모든 책임으로부터 면제되는 것이 아니라는 점을 일깨우고 있는 것이 아닐까. 잇펜이 말하듯이, 어떤 의미에서는 재가야말로, 즉 비승이면서도 비속이어야 하는 것이야말로 상근기(上根機)라야만 감당할 수 있는 난행(難行)인지도 모른다. 신란이 바로 그러한 난행의 길을 걸었는데, 우리 재가자 앞에 놓여있는 길 역시 바로 그것이 아닌가.
The Buddhist order is comprised of Renunciation and Laybuddhism. How should the appropriate Buddhist monks be like and the appropriate lay believers be like? I have discussed again by referring to the lives of the three patriarchs in the Japanese Pure Land Buddhism addressed in Chapter 17 of NAMU-AMIDABUTSU(南無阿弥陀仏) by Yanagi Muneyoshi(柳宗悅1889-1961).
The example of renunciation is living by the Dharma of Buddha. The founder of the Japanese Pure Land Buddhism(淨土宗), Honen法然is an excellent example. He widely recommended the Buddhist chanting to the public and faithfully followed the precepts. However, there are some cases when the duties as a monk were not fully satisfied by merely abiding by the religious precepts.
That is the case when a monk merely left home but thought to himself that he has to abandon everything including even the temple.
The founder of Shijong(時宗), Ippen(一遍1239-1290) was such a case.He visited various places to widely recommend Buddhist chanting to the public after abandoning his home and even the temple. This can be seen as enhancing the standard of monks. This is why I call him 'Transcendent monk(超僧)'.
Meanwhile, in the case of Layman, who first renounced the secular lives transferred to Layman after becoming a non-monk through the transgression. This is Neither Monk Nor Layman(非僧非俗). The founder of Japanese Shin Buddhism(浄土真宗), Shinran(新鸞1173-1262) fits in definition. He deeply thought that he is a neither monk nor layman. In that process, Shinran explored the way for Neither Monk Nor Layman to be also saved. With regard to Neither Monk Nor Layman, Kaneko Daiei(金子大榮) interpreted that who is already not a monk, should also not be a layman.
This means that the outside can be irrelevant whether it is monk or not when the inside is non layman. This perspective is the assessment based on the inside. It points out that non monks are not just set free from their obligations As Ippen has stated, in a sense, layman, who is not a monk has to be not a layman, can be managed asceticism only being an superior faculties processing superior religious faith and insight. Shinran took the path of difficult practices. So do lay believerstake the path of difficult practices like Shinran. |
