| 抄録 | 본 고찰은 통도사 출신으로 주목할 행적을 남긴 승려인 東谷 日陀(1929～1999)의 지성을 조계종단과의 연관성에서 살피려는 글이다. 이 글을 쓰게 된 동기는 그의 행적, 지성이 한국 현대불교사 특히 조계종단사에서 중요한 뜻을 갖고 있기 때문이다. 즉 일타의 지성과 조계종단의 좌표와의 관계성을 추출하고자 한다.
이런 입론에서 필자는 일타의 행적중에서 승가교육, 계율의 강조 및 율서 보급, 戒壇의 개신 등의 문제를 중점 거론하고자 한다. 첫째, 일타의 승가교육에 대한 지성적 행보는 1960년대 중반부터 1970년대 초반까지 佛陀主義라는 이념하에서 구체적인 대안을 제기하였음을 살펴볼 것이다. 둘째, 일타는 律師라는 호칭을 받으면서 계율에 대한 다양한 글의 기고, 계율의 교육, 계율서 보급 등을 추진하였다. 이에 대한 사실을 찾아 그 성격을 찾아 보고자 한다. 셋째, 일타의 계율에 대한 활동은 戒壇 제도의 改新으로 이어졌다. 이는 승려배출의 如法化, 율장에 근거한 전통의식의 재현을 통한 불법재흥을 의도한 것에서 나온 것이다.
이 고찰이 일타 연구의 심화, 승가교육 및 계율분야의 연구 추동, 한국 현대사에서의 계단제도의 재인식 등에 참고가 되길 기대한다. 또한 일타의 행적과 지성은 해인사 율원의 역사, 조계종의 3대사업(포교, 도제양성, 역경), 율사의 사례 연구 등의 이해에도 도움이 될 것이다.
This paper is to examine the correlation between the intelligence of the reverend Dong’gok Ilta 東谷 日陀 (1929-1999), who was from the Tongdo monastery and left noteworthy conducts, and the Jogye order.
The reason why I studied for it was that his conducts and intelligence had important meanings in the modern Korean Buddhist history, especially in the history of the Jogye order. So, I wanted to look into the correspondence between the reverend Ilta’s intelligence and the guideline of the Jogye order.
In this point of view, I mainly focused on the issues, Sangha’s education, emphasis of precepts and propagation of Vinaya pitaka, and renovation of the altar among the reverend Ilta’s conducts.
Firstly, I explored his intellectual steps for Sangha education that he suggested detailed alternatives under the ideology of ‘Buddha first 佛陀主義’ from the middle of 1960’s and the early 1970’s.
Secondly, the reverend Ilta wrote various essays related to precepts, the education of precepts, and the propagation of Vinaya pitaka after receiving the title of the precept master 律師. Finding the related proof on it, I tried to examine what he wanted to say.
Thirdly, the reverend Ilta’s activity for precepts came to renovation of the alta system. It was derived from the intentions to cultivate monks of talent in concord with the Buddha’s law 如法化 and to restore Buddhism by reenacting traditional rituals based on Vinaya pitaka.
I look forward to having this research as a reference for the intensified study on the reverend Ilta, Sangha education and the field related to precepts, and the recognition of the altar system in the modern Korean Buddhist history.
Moreover, I also wish to have it helpful for understanding on the Vinaya center of the Hae’in monastery, the Jogye order’s three projects (propagation, cultivation of talented monks, translation), and the case studies of precept masters through the reverend Ilta’s conducts and his intelligence.
