| 抄録 | 논자는 이전 논문에서 현존하는 산스크리트본 『보성론』의 종성 개념을 검토하면서, 적어도 현존하는 산스크리트본 『보성론』에는 종성을 무위로 간주할 만한 어떤 근거도 없다는 결론에 도달하였다. 그럼에도 불구하고 몇몇 현대 학자들의 견해를 포함하여, 티벳과 동아시아 여래장 사상 전통에서는 종성을 무위로 간주하는 견해가 나타난다.
본고의 주목적은, 특히 동아시아 여래장사상 전통에서, 현존하는 산스크리트본 『보성론』에는 보이지 않는 종성무위론이 어디에서 유래하고 있으며, 그 배경은 무엇인지 고찰하고자 하는 것이다. 이전 논문에서 비판적으로 살펴본 현대 학자들의 종성무위설은, 기실 티벳과 동아시아 전통의 해석을 무의식적으로 현존하는 산스크리트본 『보성론』의 종성 개념 해석에 적용한 것으로 보이기 때문이다.
본고의 고찰 결과, 동아시아 전통에 나타난 여래장사상의 종성무위론은 『보성론』의 번역용어상의 문제와 진제역 『불성론』에서 유래하는 것으로 보인다. 『보성론』과 『불성론』은 ‘gotra’를 ‘종성’이 아니라 ‘불성’으로 번역한다. 『보성론』은 여기서 한발 더 나아가 ‘진여불성’ 혹은 ‘진여성’으로 번역함으로써 후대 동아시아 불교인에게 종성을 진여로 간주할 수 있는 근거를 마련하였다.
『불성론』에는 『보성론』에는 보이지 않는 독창적인 설이 발견된다. 3인 불성론과 3종 불성론도 그 중 하나다. 『불성론』은 3인 중의 하나인 응득인을 진여로 정의하고 3종의 불성이 응득인에 포함된다고 명시적으로 주장한다. 나아가 3종 불성의 하나인 주자성(불)성(prakṛtistha-gotra)을 주자성여여(*prakṛtistha-tathatā)로 간주함으로써 이를 재확인하고 있다. 따라서 동아시아 여래장사상 전통에서 명시적으로 종성을 진여로 해석하는 것은 『불성론』에서 유래한다고 볼 수 있다.
『보성론』과 『불성론』 이전의 동아시아적 논의를 일단 별개로 한다면, 이러한 종성무위론의 연원은 두 가지로 추측할 수 있다. 그 중 하나는 『보성론』의 주석게송이나 산문주석보다는 기본 게송을 보다 중시한 경향의 반영일 수 있다. 다른 하나는 유가행파 계통의 종성 개념이 아니라 『현관장엄론』 계통의 종성 개념의 영향일 가능성이다.
In the previous paper, I have already observed that there is no evidence by which we can consider the gotra as asaṃskṛta in the extant sanskrit version of the RGV.
Nevertheless, some modern scholars, as well as some Tibetan and East Asian Tathāgathagarbha thought traditions, consider gotra as asaṃskṛta.
The aim of this paper is to investigate the origin and the background of the concept of gotra as asaṃskṛta which is not found in the extant sanskrit version of RGV, especially in the tradition of East Asian Tathāgatagarbha thought. This is because it seems that the view of some modern scholars is influenced by the traditional one which regards gotra as asaṃskṛta.
The concept of gotra as asaṃskṛta in the tradition of East Asian Tathāgatagarbha thought seems to be derived from the Chinese translation of RGV viz. the 寶性論and the compilation of the 佛性論. In the 寶性論and the 佛性論, gotra is not translated into 種姓but into 佛性. Furthermore, in the 寶性論, gotra is translated into 眞如佛性or 眞如性, which seems to become a basis for East Asian Buddhists to regard gotra as tathatā.
In the 佛性論, there are some new theories which are not found in the RGV or the 寶性論, for example, 三因佛性 and 三種佛性. Out of 三因佛性, the first one, viz. 應得因is defined as tathatā, which comprises the 三種佛性. Furthermore, out of the 三種佛性, the first one, viz. 住自性(佛)性 (prakṛtistha-gotra) is identified with 住自性如如(*prakṛtisthatathatā).
Consequently, we can observe that the concept of gotra, especially prakṛtistha-gotra, as asaṃskṛta is originated from the 佛性論in the tradition of East Asian Tathāgatagarbha thought.
Apart from the debate on the Buddha-dhātu theory before the Chinese translation of the RGV and compilation of the 佛性論, we can conjecture that there are two possibilities of the origin of gotra as asaṃskrta: the one is to attach greater importance to the śloka than to the prose commentary of the RGV, and the other is the influence of the concept of gotra of the Abhisamayālaṃkāra.
