| 抄録 | 본 고찰은 한국불교 특성(정체성)의 정립에 기여한 최남선의 조선불교 정체성 인식에 관련된 제반 문제를 살피려는 논고이다. 지금껏 최남선과 불교에 대한 문제는 다양하게 전개되어 왔지만 미진한 점이 적지 않다.
필자는 본고에서 그의 한국불교 정체성 인식의 본질을 최남선이 갖고 있었던 민족과 문명의 교섭이라는 관점에서 보려고 한다. 이것이 본 고찰의 초점이다. 이 같은 입론은 그가 민족주의적인 현실인식을 하였다는 것, 그리고 동시에 그의 인식은 문명적인 세계관이 개입되었음에서 찾으려는 것이다.
이런 관점에서 필자는 본 고찰에서 다음과 같이 논지를 전개하려고 한다. 첫째, 1910년대 최남선의 문명관과 불교 인식이다. 여기에서는 그가 일본유학을 거치면서 수용한 문명관과 그의 유년, 청년시절의 불교 인식을 분석한다. 이를 위해 <조선불교총보>에 기고한 그의 글을 발굴, 분석하였다. 둘째, 1920년대 그가 조선불교의 인식의 내용 변천 및 성격을 분석한다. 최남선이 3‧1운동을 거치면서 변모한 불교관을 살피면서, 이것이 당시 일본유학생 및 지식인들의 불교관과의 비교를 시도한다. 셋째, 이런 흐름에서 1930년 화와이에서 열린 범태평양불교청년회의에 제출하기 위해 그가 집필한 <조선불교>의 성격을 분석한다.
이런 입론, 분석을 통하여 필자는 최남선의 불교관, 한국불교 정체성의 재검토를 기할 수 있는 토대, 관점을 찾고자 한다.
This paper is an assertion to study all issues related to Choi, namseon's identity recognition of Chosen Buddhism who contributed to the special feathre of Korean Buddhism. So far, there have been developed issues related to Choi, namseon and Buddhism in various ways. This paper, on the other hand, will look into the foundations of his identity recognition in Korean Buddhism in a perspective of negotiation between nationality and civilization that Choi, namseon focused on. It is the key of this assertion. Such argument is based on the fact that he recognized the reality in nationality while his recognition was adopted by civilized world-view.
In this perspective, this paper aims to develop the following arguments. First, it will discuss Choi, namseon's recognition on civilization and Buddhism in 1910s. The paper will study civilization view that he adopted while he was studying in Japan and analyze his Buddism recognition throughout his childhood and youth period. Second, the paper will analyze contents and characteristics that he recognized in Korean Buddhism in 1920s. While studying Buddhism view that was influenced when Choi, namseon experienced the 3.1 national movement, the paper will initiate comparison of the Buddhism view between students studied in Japan and intellectuals at that time. Third, the paper will analyze characteristics of that he composed in order to submit the paper to the Pacific Buddhism Youth Association held in Hawaii in 1930.
Through such introduction and analysis, the paper expects to find foundation and viewpoint that can contribute to the re-examination of Choi, namseon's Buddhism view and identity of Korean Buddhism. |
