| 抄録 | 근대이전의 한국인에 의한 국외 불교성지순례의 대상지는 주로 중국이었다. 그 이유는 중국이 동아시아불교의 종주국이었고, 불교교학의 선진국이었기 때문이다. 그러나 근대에 오면 일본을 많이 선호하게 되는데, 그것은 당시 한국이 일본의 식민지였기 때문이기도 하지만 일본불교를 근대화의 모델로 삼았기 때문이다. 일본불교성지순례는 시찰단이 주를 이루는데, 순수한 구법여행이라기보다 일본의 근대시설을 견학하기 위한 ‘선진문물견학’이 주목적이었고 참가자도 친일인사가 많았다. 한편, 李英宰는 일본에 유학하던 도중 스리랑카와 인도를 순례하기 위해 단신 스리랑카로 건너갔다. 그 후 캔디를 비롯한 스리랑카 각지를 순례하였지만 남겨진 기록은 별로 없고, 도중에 병사하였기 때문에 인도는 순례하지 못하였다.
외국인에 의한 국내불교성지순례자로서는 相馬勝英이 특이하다. 그는 당시의 일본승려들이 ‘한국불교는 일본불교를 본받아야 한다’고 생각했던 것과 달리, 한국에 체재하면서 한국불교를 좋아하게 되었다. 특히 그는 방한암선사를 깊이 존경하였고, 선수행의 경지를 인정하였다. 그의 친한적 태도가 총독부의 한국불교정책에까지 영향을 미치지는 못했지만, 일본인들이 한국불교를 긍정적으로 인식하는 계기가 되었다.
That was China where korean buddhists went on a pilgrimage to in pre-modern times. Because China was the center of east-asia buddhism. But in modern times, korean buddhists frequently go on a pilgrimage to japan instead of china. Because that not only korea was colony of japan from 1910 to 1945, but also korean buddhists recognize japan buddhism as a model of modernization. On pilgrimage to japan, many inspection teams were sent. But the purpose of inspection team was learning modern civilization of japan than purely learning buddhism.
On the other hand, Lee Young Jae(李英宰) went to Sri-ranka to purely studying buddhism and make pilgrimage India's holy place. But his pilgrimage India can not succeeded because of his sudden death. Soma shouei(相馬勝英) is a special person who made a pilgrimage holy place of korea buddhism in modern times. At that time, the most of japan buddhist thought that korean buddhism must follow japan buddhism. But Soma becomes respect korean buddhism, especially zen master Bang Han Am(方寒巖). Although his friendly view of korean buddhism can not influence on policy of the Japanese Government General, many japanese buddhists become appreciate korean buddhism as worth learning.
