| 抄録 | 백학명(1867~1929)은 한말에 태어나서 일제시기를 살다간 불교계의 선각자로서 승려들이 생산 활동에 종사하지 않고 유식(遊食)하는 풍조를 반성하고 선풍(禪風)을 진작시키고자 하였다. 그는 일본 불교의 유입으로 조선불교를 일본 불교에 동화시키려는 조선총독부의 불교정책으로 대처식육이 만연되어 가던 시기에 조선불교의 정통성을 수호하려고 노력하였다. 그는 1922년 비구승들이 결성한 선우공제회의 창립 취지 공감하여 발기인으로 동참하였다. 그는 주지가 사찰 재산을 농락하지 못하도록 해야 한다고 하였다. 그는 예술적인 자질이 풍부해서 많은 불교 가사를 남겨 국문학사에 크게 기여하였다. 그의 가사는 노래를 부르면서 하는 노동을 통해서 자신의 참모습을 발견하고, 노동하는 가운데 화두를 참구하는 선(禪) 수행이야말로 새시대의 희망을 구현하고 불교혁신을 지향하는 것이었다고 한다.
필자는 백학명의 선농일치 추구를 그의 불교개혁론의 구체적인 실현으로 보고자 한다. 백학명의 선농일치 지향을 농사 짓는 것과 선 수행을 같은 비율로 등치시킨 것이 아니라 선 수행을 우위에 둔 것으로 보고자 한다. 이러한 점은 그가 승려의 본분사를 강조하였다는 점에서 볼 때 보다 분명하게 드러난다. 그는 궁극적으로 깨달음을 추구하였으며, 그 깨달음을 바탕으로 중생들을 제도하고자 하였다. 이러한 목적 달성을 위하여 농사 짓는 일을 수행의 한 방편으로 삼았으며, 실행 방법에 있어 가사를 부르게 함으로써 노동 생산성을 향상시키는 동시에 수행 효과도 높이고자 하였다는 점을 밝히고자 한다.
Baek Hak Myoung (1867 – 1929) was a precursor of Buddhism who was born at the end of Korean Empire and lived through Japanese Occupation. He criticized monks’ unproductive and idle lives and tried to propagate ‘Zen’. In his days the Japanese government introduced Japanese Buddhism into Korea, and as a result marriage and meat diet were prevalent in monks. In that situation, he made efforts to secure the orthodoxy of Korean Buddhism. In 1922 he vibed on the prospectus of Zenists Union and took part in it as an erector. He insisted that deans should not misappropriate the properties of temples. Thanks to artistic talent of a high order, he left many Buddhist lyrics and made a great contribution to Korean literature. His lyrics imply that labor is the way to reflect on ourselves, to make Zen meditation possible, and to actualize new hope and Buddhistic Reformism.
Editorial ‘I’ view his pursuit of Zen-agriculture unity as a concerte solution for Buddhistic Reform. It seems that he would not equate Zen meditation with agriculture but would put Zen meditation above agriculture. It is backed up by the fact that he emphasized monks’ bounden duties. He ultimately pursued enlightenment, and aimed to enlighten mankind. In line with the aim, he made agriculture a means for discipline. In addition, his lyrics were to improve agricultural productivity and discipline effect as well. |
