| 抄録 | 華嚴과 禪의 관계에 대한 기존의 논문들이 양자의 相通性을 주로 다룬 것에 반해 본 논문은 양자의 차이를 논한 것이다. 일본 에도시대의 화엄승인 鳳潭(1654~1738)은 『鐵壁雲片』에서 圓悟克勤(1063~1125)의 『碧巖錄』을 비판하고 있는데, 근본적인 이유는 원오가 澄觀·宗密의 사상을 계승하고 있다는 것이었다. 비판의 요점은 크게 세 가지인데, 첫째는 ‘원오가 주장하는 靈知는 善의 측면만 지닐 뿐 惡을 포섭하지 못한다’는 것이다. 『碧巖錄』에서 원오는 실제로 靈知의 淸淨性만을 주로 강조하지만, 敎宗에서 청정법신을 極則으로 삼는 것을 비판하고 있기 때문에 봉담의 주장은 타당하지 않다. 둘째는 ‘깨달음을 지향하는 간화선은 엉터리이다. 왜냐하면 모든 중생은 태어날 때부터 깨달아 있기 때문이다’고 해서 證悟를 부정하고 本覺思想의 입장에 선다. 또 ‘간화선은 分別智를 부정하지만, 분별지야말로 究竟覺에 이르는 길이다’고 한다. 그러나 간화선은 수행의 과정에서는 분별지를 버려야 하지만, 깨달은 후에 획득되는 영지는 분별지마저 포섭한 것이므로 봉담의 주장은 타당하지 않다. 셋째는 ‘간화선은 화엄의 五敎判 중에서 大乘終敎에 해당되는데, 대승종교란 如來藏思想을 가리킨다. 그런데 간화선은 여래장사상 중에서도 空如來藏만을 가리키는 편협한 이론이다’고 봉담은 비판한다. 한편 敎判에 있어서는 원오의 선은 法藏의 五敎判 중에서 大乘終敎의 단계에 지나지 않으며, 사상적으로는 天台宗 山外派와 유사하다고 한다.
결론적으로 말하면, 봉담의 원오이해가 반드시 정확하지는 않다. 특히 ‘원오의 靈知는 징관·종밀을 계승한 것이다’는 기본전제에 있어서 의문이 남는다. 봉담은 화엄승이면서도 천태사상의 영향을 크게 받고 있기 때문에 화엄의 영향이 큰 원오와의 사이에는 넘을 수 없는 장벽이 존재했다고 생각된다.
Whereas previous papers regarding the relationship between the Hwaom sect and the Zen sect mainly addressed commonness between the two, this paper discussed differences between the two. Houtan(鳳潭,1654~1738) who was a Hwaom Buddhist monk in the edo period in Japan criticized 『Biyan lu(碧巖錄)』 written by Yuanwu-keqin(圓悟克勤,1063~1125). A basic reason of the criticism is that Yuanwu succeeded to the thoughts of Chengguan(澄觀) and Zongmi(宗密). Key points of the criticism are largely three. The first one is that the spiritual understanding (靈知) argued by Yuanwu has only the aspect of good and cannot embrace evil. However, Houtan’s argument is not valid because, although Yuanwu mainly emphasized the cleanness of spiritual understanding in 『Biyan lu(碧巖錄)』, he criticized depraved sects’ act of regarding clean Buddha as a supreme rule. Second, Houtan denies enlightenment and stands for the thought of fundamental understanding indicating that ‘Ganhwaseon(看話禪) that pursues enlightenment is nonsense because all people has been enlightened from the moment of birth’. He also argues, ‘Although Ganhwaseon denies discernment, discernment is the way to reach ultimate enlightenment’. However, Houtan's argument is not valid because although discernment should be abandoned in the asceticism of Ganhwaseon, the spiritual understanding obtained after being enlightened embraces even discernment. Third, Houtan criticizes, ‘Ganhwaseon corresponds to mahayana sect among the five sects of Hwaom and mahayana sect refers to the thought of hidden Buddha. And Ganhwaseon is a narrow-minded theory that refers to only empty hidden Buddha out of among the thought of hidden Buddha.’ Meanwhile, Houtan says that the sect of Yuanwu’s Zen is only at the level of mahayana sect among the five sects of Fazang(法藏) and Yuanwu’s thought is similar to that of Sanoei sect under Chentae order.
In conclusion, Houtan's understanding of Yuanwu is not completely correct. In particular, his basic premise that ‘Yuanwu’s spiritual understanding succeeds to Chengguan(澄觀) and Zongmi(宗密)’ is doubtful. A barrier that cannot be crossed is thought to have existed between Houtan and Yuanwu because Houtan was greatly affected by Chentae thought although he was a Hwaom Buddhist monk and Yuanwu was greatly affected by Hwaom.
