| 抄録 | 소설 『싯다르타』는 카스트 제1계급에 속하는 바라문의 아들인 주인공 싯다르타가 실제 불교를 창시한 석가모니 부처님을 만난 이후 다양한 인생 경험을 거쳐 마침내 법[진리]을 얻게 된다는 내용으로 출간 직후부터 서구인들의 관심을 크게 불러일으켰다. 헤르만 헤세는 이 소설에서 현실의 인간이 어떻게 세속적 쾌락과 아상, 그리고 마음의 오만을 초극하여 불교적 절대경지에까지 도달할 수 있는지에 관해 매우 구체적이며 심도 있게 그렸다.
본고는 헤르만 헤세의 대표적 불교 구도소설이라고 할 수 있는 『싯다르타』에서 핵심적인 불교사상을 도출, 이를 바탕으로 소설이 지니는 불교사상적 가치와의의를 고찰할 목적으로 진행되었다. 소설 『싯다르타』에서 발견되는 주요 사상은 크게 다음의 세 가지로 요약 가능하다. 첫째, 『싯다르타』 전반을 관통하고있는 주요사상은 실유불성(悉有佛性)으로서의 존재성, 곧 불성사상(佛性思想)이다. 소설 속 주인공 싯다르타는 처음에 지향하던 단순한 자기초월 내지 극복이라는 수행의 목적을 세존을 만난 이후 누구나 구족하고 있는 불성의 체득으로 전환함으로써 구도의 목적과 가치를 대승불교적으로 합일시키고 있다. 둘째, ‘불립문자(不立文字)’ 개념이다. 불교에서는 진리자체를 말이나 글로써 과연 정확하게전할 수 있는가에 관한 문제의 해결방안 중 하나로 ‘불립문자(不立文字)’관이 제시되었다. 이 불립문자의 개념이 소설 『싯다르타』에서도 구도에 이르기 위한 매우 중요한 방편으로 다루어지고 있다. 셋째, ‘불이적(不二的) 세계관’이다. 소설『싯다르타』에서 합일적으로 세계를 바라보는 헤세의 이른바 ‘총체적 단일의식’은세상과 자아와의 연관성, 곧 일체 존재간의 관계를 불가분의 상입상즉의 관계로보는 불교의 핵심진리 기제인 ‘불이적(不二的) 세계관’에서 비롯되어 전존재적동류의식으로 발현되고 있다.
이렇게 『싯다르타』에서는 ‘불성사상’과 ‘불이사상’, ‘불립문자’ 개념 등 서양 문학작품에서는 매우 보기 드문 불교사상적 정수를 담고 있음이 확인된다. 이에『싯다르타』에서 발견되는 불교사상 철학을 토대로 이 소설이 가지는 불교문학적가치와 의의에 주목하고자 한다.
Siddhartha is one of Hermann Hesse’s masterpiece novels. Hesse depicts in it in detail how a human being may overcome this-worldly pleasures, selfishness and self-centeredness so as to reach the ultimate state of Buddhist ideal.
Siddhartha in the novel is a youth from a family of brahman class, the priestly and thus highest rank in ancient Indian caste system. He lives a comfortable and honorable life. However, the fervor for new experiences and wisdom grows stronger as he gets aged. He sets on the journey for enlightenment and comes across with Gautama Buddha. He thenceforth goes through various experiences of vicissitudes and at last attains the enlightenment to the Truth after much meandering of life.
This novel attracted much attention in the West as soon as it was published. Numerous studies have been done on it. But there has been almost no serious study on the Buddhist ideas and philosophy in the novel. There have been some attempts, instead, to explain away its Buddhist ideas in terms of Indian or Taoist or even Christian philosophy.
The most important key ideas underlying Siddhartha are: Firstly, everyone of us human beings has the Buddha - nature and thus the inherent identity as a Buddha; secondly, we are all dependent on one another, mutually inter - penetrating, and thus inseparable from one another - beings of non - duality(advaita); thirdly, the enlightenment to these truths is ineffable and thus cannot be taught in words, but might be only experienced through the deepest insight into human conditions.
Siddhartha is a narrative of the whole process of vicissitudes toward the ultimate enlightenment to the Buddhist Dharma from the perspective of Mahayana Buddhist, especially Zen Buddhist, ideal. What it advocates in terms of the ideas of universal Buddha-nature and Non-duality are the same as the Buddhist doctrines’ focal points: The limitless potentiality and dignity of human dignity; and the compassion for all beings.
