| 抄録 | 본 논문은 고성 옥천사 명부전 불상을 조성한 조각승 경옥(敬玉)에 대한 연구이다. 고성 옥천사 명부전 발원문은 이들 존상들이 1670년 경옥을 포함한 4명의조각승에 의해 조성된 것을 알려준다. 고성 옥천사 명부전 권속은 경옥이 수화승으로 활동한 유일한 작품으로 그의 조형 감각을 분석할 수 있는 귀중한 자료이다.
경옥은 17세기 중반을 대표하는 조각승 승일(勝一), 희장(熙藏), 도우(道祐)에대한 연구를 통해 존재가 알려진 조각승이다. 경옥은 1648년에는 승일의 정수사불상 조성불사와, 1649년부터 1650년까지 희장의 불상 조성불사에 참여하였다.
1653년부터 1655년까지는 도우와 함께 대구 3건의 조성 불사에 참여하였다. 이러한 수련기 활동을 통해 경옥은 크게 승일과 희장 계보에 속한 조각승으로 볼수 있다. 그러나 경옥이 나무가 아닌 석조로 대부분의 불상을 조성한 점은 희장계보에서 함께 수련기를 보낸 승호와의 관련성도 유추해 볼 수 있다. 특히 보주를쥔 지장보살좌상의 형태는 승호 및 그 계보에 속한 조각승이 조성한 지장보살좌상에서도 동일하게 나타나는 것으로 경옥과 승호는 명부전 지장보살좌상 조성방식에 있어서는 동일한 도상적인 이해를 공유했던 것으로 보인다.
명부전 하부권속에서는 희장이 조성한 진도 쌍계사 존상들과 유사한 조형감각을 찾을 수 있다. 비록 목재와 석조라는 재질 차이와 신체비례에서는 공통점을찾을 수 없지만, 변화가 없는 시왕 관모 형태, 10구 시왕상을 거의 동일하게 조성한 점, 장신구(관모와 광다회) 표현 및 장군상의 날개장식 등을 통해 두 사찰명부전 존상들 사이에서 동일한 조형 감각을 발견할 수 있다. 이를 통해 경옥은희장이 속한 계보의 조각승으로 수련기를 보내면서, 그 계보 명부전 조상 지침을충실히 따랐던 것으로 보인다.
현재까지 밝혀진 경옥의 조상활동은 고성 옥천사 1건 뿐이지만, 경상도 일대다수 사찰에 유사한 조형감각을 공유하는 불상들이 남아있다. 이를 통해 경옥은17세기 후반 승호와 함께 경상도 일대 석조불상 조성 활동에 왕성하게 참여하였던 조각승으로 판단할 수 있다. 앞으로 전국 사찰에 봉안된 조선후기 불상의 조성발원문이 체계적으로 공개된다면 조각승 경옥과 관련된 분석을 할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
This paper is a study for a monk sculptor, Gyeong Ok(敬玉). Recently, the votive inscription of Goseong Okcheonsa(玉泉寺) Myeongbujeon(冥府殿) shows that Geong Ok and three monks carved Ksitigarbha triad, the Ten Kings and other attendants. This Myeongbujeon sculpture is the only work that can analyze his sense of sculptor.
Gyeongok is a sculptor whose existence is known through research on the sculpture Seung Il(勝一), Hee Jang(熙藏), and Do U(道祐)), all of whom represent the mid - 17th century’s main figures of monk sculptor. He work with Seong Il in 1648, and during 1649~1650 he participated in Hee Jang's Buddhist sculpture rendering project. From 1653 to 1655, he jointed Do U's three Buddhist sculpture making assingmnets around Dea - gu(大邱) district. Through his training activities, Gyeong Ok can be seen as a sculptor belonging to Seung Il and Hee Jang monk sculptor school. However, the fact that Gyeongok created most of the Buddha statues in stone rather than wood can be inferred from his connection with Seung - ho, who work within Hee Jang monk sculptor school. In particular, the shape of the Ksitigarbha holding a sphericity, which belongs to Seung - ho sculptor school, appears to have shared the same iconographical understanding in terms of how to create a Ksitigarbha statue.
the Ten Kings and other attendants seem to share similar a sense of sculpture in Ssanggyesa in Jindo, which wre created by Hee Jang in 1666. Although there is nothing in common with the material difference between wood and stone, one can find the same sense of composition between the two temple's statue of the Ten Kings. Through this, Gyeong Ok seems to have faithfully followed the instructions of Hee Jang's sculptor school.
Although only one temple in Okcheonsa has been discovered to Geong Ok's work, Buddha sculptures, sharing a similar style of Gyeong Ok, remain in many Buddhist temples in Gyeongsang-do. By doing so, Gyeongok can be judged as a monk sculpture monk who was actively involved in stone Buddha's statues in Gyeongsang Province in the late 17th century along with Seungho. If many votive inscriptions, enshrined in temples across the country, is systematically disclosed, it is hope that the analysis to Gyeong Ok's stylistic features, can be further diversified.
