| 抄録 | 본 고찰은 한국현대기 불교사의 중요한 대상인 불교정화운동에 관여한 경산(京山, 1917~1979)의 활동을 분석한 글이다. 불교정화운동에 대해서는 지금껏 개요 및 성격, 그리고 그 주역에 대한 연구가 적지 않게 이루어졌다. 그러나 아직도 관여 인물에 대한 연구는 부진하다. 정화운동을 이끌던 승려에 대한 연구에서 누락된 대상도 있고, 정화운동을 비판하였던 승려도 연구되지 않았다.
이에, 본고에서는 정화운동의 핵심적인 주체이었던 경산의 관련 내용을 역사적 맥락으로 정리하고자 하였다. 경산은 율사, 자비보살로 지칭되었고, 조계종단의 총무원장을 네 차례나 역임한 고승이었다. 그렇지만 그에 대한 자료집도 없고, 연구도 지금껏 전무한 현실에서 그가 수행한 불교정화운동의 연구를 시도하는 것은 매우 어렵다. 이에 필자는 이런 현실을 고려하여 그의 활동 내용을 보도한 신문기사와 정화운동의 관련 자료에 나타난 것을 역사적인 순서에 의해 정리하고자 하였다.
이런 배경에서 필자는 경산의 불교정화운동을 2단계로 나누어 살폈다. 우선 1954년부터 1962년 통합종단이 등장하기 이전을 1단계로 설정했다. 이때 경산은 정화운동의 최일선에서 활동했다. 다음 2단계는 1962년 통합종단 등장시부터 경산이 총무원장 소임을 그만두고 무문관 수행에 들어간 1967년까지 설정했다. 그런데 2단계의 통합종단은 3대 사업(교육, 역경, 포교)을 추진하였다. 그래서 경산의 활동은 3대사업과 연관이 깊다. 또한 그 당시는 3대 사업 실현의 부진, 비구승 부패, 대처승 반발 등으로 재정화를 추진해야 한다는 흐름도 강력했다. 이런 현실에서 경산의 인식과 대안의 내용을 주목하였다.
본 고찰이 경산의 생애, 불교정화운동, 조계종단사 등의 연구에 기여되기를 바라는 바이다.
This study is an analysis of Gyeongsan(京山:1917~1979) activities that were involved in the Buddhist purification movement which is an important subject of Korean modern period Buddhist history. There have been so many studies on the Buddhist purification movement, its background, character, and its main role. However, research on the involved people is still poor. There are some objects missing in the study of the monks who led the purification movement, and no monks criticizing the purification movement.
In this paper, I tried to summarize the historical contents of Gyeongsan, which was a key subject of the purification movement. Gyeongsan was named as Yulsa(律師), Jabi Bodhisattva (자비보살), and was the chief priest who served four times as the general secretary of the Jokgye order(曹溪宗). However, it is very difficult to do research about it in the fact that there is no book about it and the research has never been done before. In this regard, I have tried to summarize the historical facts in the reports related to this reality and related data of the purification movement.
In this background, I divided the Buddhist purification movement of Gyeongsan into two stages. First, from 1954 to 1962, the first stage was set before the introduction of the unified end. At that time, Gyeongsan was active at the forefront of the purification movement. At that time, Gyeongsan was active at the forefront of the purification movement. The second stage was set up in 1967, when the six-year period ended, when Gyeongsan left the general secretary's office from the beginning of the unified term in 1962. However, the second stage of integrated endeavored the three major projects(education, adversity, and mission). So the activities of Gyeongsan are deeply connected with these three projects. At the time, it was also strong that the financial reform should be promoted by sluggish realization of the three major projects, anti - corruption and counter - proliferation. In this reality, I noticed Gyeongsan's perception and alternative contents.
I hope that this review contributes to the life of Gyeongsan, the Buddhist purification movement, the understanding and study of the Jogye order monogamy.
