| 抄録 | 일본 정토교의 정의는 전법문을 성도문(聖道門)과 정토문(浄土門)의 두 가지로 분류하고 시기(時機)의 상응불상응이라는 관점으로부터 자력이며 난행(難行)인 성도문을 선택하고 나머지는 버리는 것을 출발점으로 삼는 매우 특수한 것이다. 그러나 신라 정토교는 범부왕생을 안이하게 인정하지 않고, 결코 타력의 이행(易行)인 정토문을 옳다고 하는 것이 아니다. 전혀 이질적은 방향을 추구하였음에도 불구하고, 일률적으로 정토문의 방법론에 의해서 해석이 시도되는 현상은 매우 이해하기 어렵다고 생각한다. 본고에서는 원효의 『무량수경종요』를 예로 들어서 신라정토교의 연구가 걸어가야 할 자세에 대해서 제언하고자 한다.
The Japanese Pure Land tradition has an unusual method of evaluating the Buddhist dharma, basing its doctrine on dividing Buddhist teachings into the Gateway of the Holy Path and the Gateway of the Pure Land, and then selectively choosing to abandon the difficult practices of self-power taught in the Gateway of the Holy Path. However, the Pure Land tradition in Silla did not admit easy rebirth of common people in the Pure Land and, hence, did not necessarily adhere to the easy practices of other-power taught in the Gateway of the Pure Land. Considering that the Pure Land traditions of Japan and Silla took different approaches to salvation, examining the Silla tradition uniformly from the standpoint of the Gateway of the Pure Land strikes one as absurd. This paper proposes a more authentic approach to the study of the Pure Land tradition in Silla using the example of Wŏnhyo’s Doctrinal Essentials of the Sukhāvatī Vhūha Sūtra.
