| 抄録 | 선덕왕은 여성으로서는 최초로 왕위에 등극한 인물로 신라사회 속에서의 여성지위를 이해하는데 있어 중요한 의미를 확보한다. 또한 선덕과 진덕 이후 김춘추에 의한 진골과 통일왕조가 열리게 된다는 점에서, 신라에서 통일신라로의 변화를 파악함에 있어 주목되는 인물이기도 하다.
그런데 선덕왕에 대한 내용은 지기삼사(知幾三事)와 같이 신이(神異)함에 관한 기록으로 되어 있어 문제접근에 어려움을 주고 있다. 그러므로 선덕왕과 대한 이해는 지기삼사와 같은 신이함 속에 내포되어 있는 상징과 의미파악이 중요하다.
본고는 〈선덕왕지기삼사〉 중 제1사인 ‘향기 없는 모란에 관한 내용’의 상징과 타당성에 대한 접근이다. 제1사에 관한 내용을 전체적으로 정리하면, 선덕왕 즉위 초에 발생하는 유교문화에 입각한 당태종의 조롱에 왕권이 흔들리자, 선덕왕이 분황사를 창건하며 불력(佛力)에 의지해 문제를 해결하는 것이다. 이러한 과정에서 여성국왕이라는 한계를 불교에 의지해 극복하려다 보니, 선덕왕은 필연적으로 불교와 강한 친연관계를 형성하며 반중국적인 자주성을 보이게 된다.
제1사의 고찰을 통해서 신이함 속에 내재한 사실적 측면에 대해 보다 근접할 수 있게 된다. 이러한 사실적 측면의 규명은 선덕왕이 신이함 보다는 중국의 유교적인 가치관과 충돌하면서 불교에 의지해 왕위를 지키려는 노력을 경주한 인물이라는 것을 파악을 가능하게 한다. 그리고 이와 같은 과정에서 종교를 통해 국론을 결집시키고 반중국적인 노선을 취하여 자주성을 천명하는 부분은 이후 신라가 통일로 나아가는데 있어서 초석이 된다.
Queen Seondeok was the first known Korean queen. Her life is very important for understanding the position of women in Silla society. Moreover, Queen Seondeok was considered as a person linking Silla to Unified Silla. This is because the Unified Silla Dynasty and Jingol's Age were opened by Kim Chunchu in succession to Queen Seondeok and Jindeok.
However, there are some mysterious aspects to Queen Seondeok’s reign, such as the Three Affairs that Queen Seondeok had already known, which were prevalent among the people. This circumstance creates a difficult approach to examining the queen’s history. Therefore, for a full examination of Queen Seondeok, it is important to comprehend the implications and symbolism of the Three Affairs mystery.
The first of the Three Affairs is “Peony without Fragrance.” The symbolism and validity of this affair has been previously examined. Here, an overview of the first affair will be provided. In early days of Queen Seondeok, the queen's authority was unstable because of the Confucianism-based strategy of Emperor Taizong of Tang. At that time, Queen Seondeok had built the Bunhwangsa Temple, and attempted to wisely solve problems through Buddhist power. Through this process, Queen Seondeok desired to overcome the limitations of being the queen through Buddhism. Thus, Queen Seondeok inevitably formed a close fidelity with Buddhism, and showed an independent trend against China.
By considering the First Affair, a study can approach the factual aspects of the mystery more closely. This kind of factual examination enables comprehension of Queen Seondeok’s method of trying to retain the queenship through Buddhism rather than mysticism while she was also at conflict with the Chinese value system. Through this process, she attempted to consolidate national opinion by using religion to gain the support of the anti-Chinese powers, and to proclaim the independence of Silla. In this respect, it can be asserted that Queen Seondeok laid the foundation for developing Silla into Unified Silla.
