| 抄録 | 중생에게 차별이 일어나는 원인을 『대승기신론』에서는 무명번뇌의 두껍고 얇음으로 보는 반면, 『석마하연론』은 무명의 차별성을 부정하고 무명의 동일성을 주장한다. 『석론』은 주석하는 대상인 『대승기신론』과의 상위를 해결하기 위해 자종결정과 인섭결정을 설정하여, 목적에 따라 다르게 설해진 것일 뿐으로 서로 어긋남이 없음을 밝힌다.
하지만 『석론』은 무명이 하나라고 동일성을 주장함에도 불구하고, 무명을 밝은 무명[明無明] · 어두운 무명[闇無明] · 밝거나 어두운 무명[俱是無明] · 밝지도 어둡지도 않은 무명[俱非無明] · 공한 무명[空無明] · 밝음과 어둠을 갖춘 무명[具足無明]으로 설명한다. 이에 대해『석론』은 여섯 가지 무명은 그 자체는 하나이지만 의미에 따라 나눈 것이라고 밝히면서, 무명을 동일성으로 보는 입장을 유지한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 동일한 의미를 두 가지로 표현[俱是無明 · 具足無明]하고 무명을 무위와 유위에 동시에 위치시키는 등의 모순은 여전히 남아있다.
또한『석론』 전체의 무명 이해와의 관계를 살펴보면 여섯 가지 중 공한 무명과 어두운 무명만이 연관성이 있다. 더욱이 여섯 가지 무명의 명칭은 불각을 설명하는 부분을 제외하고는 단 한 번도 등장하지 않고, 밝은 무명은 다섯 겹으로 된 문답[五重問答]의 논의를 무의미하게 만들어 버린다.『석론』은 『기신론』을 해석하는 입장에서 본론(本論)에 따라 일반적인 무명의 의미로 논의하고 있기 때문에, 여섯 가지 무명을 일반적인 의미의 무명 서술에 적용하게 되면 모순이 나타나게 되는 것이다.
이와 같은 모순에도 불구하고 『석론』이 독창적인 무명 이해를 보이는 이유는 본각과 동일선상에서 무명을 보아 차별성과 더불어 동일성을 부여하는 『석론』의 무명관을 제시하여 『기신론』의 무명보다 더 넓은 영역을 포괄하는 새로운 무명을 설정하기 위한 것으로 판단된다. 그리고 궁극적으로는 『석론』만의 독자적 사상체계인 33법문 중 『석론』의 중심에 놓여있는 불이마하연법의 논리적 정립을 위해 의도적으로 구성한 것으로 추정된다. 본고에서 다룬 『기신론』과 『석론』의 무명에 대한 이해는 5세기에서 8세기까지 무명을 바라보는 시각의 변용을 확인하는 기회가 될 것이라고 기대해 본다.
The Awakening of Mahāyāna Faith (大乘起信論, abbreviated as AMF) says that the thickness of nescience makes sentient beings different. However, the Shi moheyan lun (釋摩訶 衍論, the commentary on the AMF, abbreviated as SML) asserts not the differentiation but the identity of nescience. For solving the divergence between AMF and SML, the SML sets two concepts- the truth decision (自宗決定) and the expedient decision (自宗決定). It proves that there is no contradiction between the two decisions because they are interpreted differently, depending on the purpose.
Although the SML maintains oneness of nescience, the nescience is divided into six: bright (明), dark (闇), bright or dark (俱是), not bright or dark (俱非), empty (空), and bright and dark (具足). In this regard, the SML explains that the essence of six is the same as one but shows up differently by meaning.
Nonetheless, there are two problems: the same meaning is expressed differently as two, and the nescience includes unconditioned and conditioned dharmas simultaneously. Moreover, only the nescience of empty and dark have some connection with the general understanding of nescience in the SML. In addition, the names of six nesciences make no reference, except to the part of non-enlightenment, and the bright nescience makes the five-fold Question and Answer meaningless. This contradiction would occur when the six nesciences apply to the notion of normal nescience because the SML is based on the interpretation of the AMF which discusses a prevailing concept of nescience.
The reasons for the SML to comprehend nescience creatively can be supposed as follows. First, the SML suggests its own viewpoint that nescience and original nature are placed at the same position. Second, the SML tries to extend the scope of nescience beyond the AMF. Third, ultimately, it is for founding non-duality Mahāyāna (不二摩訶衍法) in 33 dharma-gates in the SML. |
