| 抄録 | 이 논문은 동아시아라는 문화네트워크의 형성과 전개에 불교가 어떻게 기여하고, 또 동아시아 문화네트워크의 결속이 어떻게 불교를 통해서 더 강화되었는지를 살펴본 것이다. 그리고 이러한 검토를 통해서 동아시아 세계의 소통에 있어서 불교는 어떠한 역할을 해왔고 또 할 수 있을 것인지에 대한 모색을 시도하였다.
동아시아 불교, 더 나아가 불교를 기반으로 하는 동아시아 문화네트워크는 다음과 같은 세 가지 측면에서 소통을 위한 사상적 기반을 제공한다고 생각된다. 첫째는 일체개성(一切皆成)의 인간관이다. 이것이 현실에서 어느 정도의 실현 가능성을 가지고 있는지의 여부와 관계없이, 동아시아 불교는 공통적으로 그것을 이상적 실현태로서 추구한다. 둘째는 독단적 진리해석을 배제하는 것이다. 동아시아 불교 역시 연기적 사유체계라는 불교의 기본적 사유체계에 속한다는 것에 동의한다면, 이것은 당연한 논점이다. 셋째는 동일성과 차별성의 어느 것도 부정하지 않는 소통체계이다. 동아시아 불교사상이 추구하는 네트워킹은 동일한 것들 간의 소통만이 아니라 다른 것들 간의 소통 역시 포함한다는 점을 밝혔다.
이들 사상적 기반이 역사적 사례에서 항상 긍정적으로 작용한 것만은 아니지만, 성공적으로 작용된 한두 사례를 논문 안에서 언급하였다. 그리고 결론을 대신하여, 동아시아 세계 내의 소통과 융합에 대한 불교적 모색은 어떤 점에 기반해야 할 것인지에 대한 논자 나름의 추론을 제시하였다.
This paper examines how Buddhism played a role in the formation, development, and strengthening of an East Asian cultural network. The paper also searches for the role that Buddhism has played, and will play, in communication in the East Asian world.
East Asian Buddhism, or the East Asian cultural network based on Buddhism, provides three ideological bases for communication. These are as follows: (1) To believe that everyone can achieve what they want—regardless of the possibility of realization in the real world, East Asian Buddhism wholly emphasizes thinking as the ideal actuality; (2) To deny a dogmatic interpretation of the truth—this is natural as East Asian Buddhism belongs to the basic Buddhist thinking structure of the Dependent Arising. The last is the communication system that does not deny identity or distinctiveness. The East Asian Buddhist network does not encompasses communication only amongst those that are the same but also amongst those who are different.
As these ideological bases did not always play ideal roles in history, some successful historical examples are mentioned in this paper. Lastly, I suggest a model of Buddhism that searches for communication and confluence amongst the East Asian world.
