| 抄録 | 법정의 『무소유』는 현대인들이 가슴에 새겨야 할 지혜로운 삶의 지침서인 동시에 선불교사상이 오롯이 녹아있는 수상록이다. 『무소유』의 미덕은 작가가 스님임에도 불구하고 대중들이 접하기 쉬운 수필문학 형식으로 일상의 단상을 통해 깨달음을 전달했다는 데 있다.
그러나 바로 이러한 이유로 『무소유』가 한편으로는 마치 문학의 영역에 국한된 것처럼 치부되는 경향도 없지 않았다. 이를테면 『무소유』에 대한 연구가 대개 문학계를 중심으로 이루어져 왔다는 점과 불교학계에서의 『무소유』에 대한 적극적인 불교 내지 선사상적 측면의 조명이 미흡했다는 점에서 이러한 사실은 반증된다.
한마디로 일반 세속수필과는 달리 『무소유』는 중생심(衆生心)만으로 쓰이지 않았다. 비록 주로 일상사를 기술하고는 있지만 『무소유』는 세간의 문학적 잣대만으로는 온전한 설명이 불가능한 선적(禪的) 사유에서 출발함으로써 그야말로 일반 문학집과는 큰 변별성을 지닌다는 것이다.
『무소유』에서 법정은 무소유란 아무 것도 갖지 않는 것이 아니라 불필요한 것을 갖지 않는다는 것이며, 모든 것을 버리는 것이 아니라 물상에 대한 집착을 떠나 최소한의 소유로 만족하는 마음을 지니는 것이라 한다. 이와 같은 무소득(無所得)의 인식은 본질적으로 선적 진리관에서 우러나오는 대승불교적 사유에 입각한다.
따라서 ‘공과 불이의 중도관에 바탕한 무소유’, ‘본래무일물과 무소유’ 그리고 ‘침묵의 헐을 통한 수행’에서 드러나는 평범함 속에 가리워진 비범의 진리를 얼마나 구체적으로 살피느냐에 따라 『무소유』의 독법은 제대로 완성되리라 보는 것이다.
Ven. Beobjeong's Non-Possession, a collection of his essays, went out of print in 2010, in accordance with his will. Since its first publication in 1976, it had been one of the steadiest best-sellers for over 30 years. The most important merit of the book is that it conveys what the Buddhist enlightenment is in the style of essay literature, so is neither in the style of a pedantic lecture nor of a religious sermon.
This merit, however, has a negative side effect: it enabled the book to be taken simply as a work of literature. The fact that most studies on the book have approached it as simply a literary work testifies to this trend.
However, the essays in Non-Possession are not simply secular literary works. Although they are all about everyday affairs, there are factors in them that cannot be fully explicated through conventional literary theories. They are not the works of an ordinary sentient being's mind, but of an awakened Seon master's mind, which can see through the ordinary into the Truth, that is, “the Tao of the ordinary” or “the extraordinary hidden in the ordinary.” This is the point on which they are essentially different from ordinary essays of secular literature. Our reading of Non-Possession cannot be complete until we appreciate this point.
This article focuses on the Seon spirit that underlies the essays in Non-Possession. It attempts to find out the core elements of the Seon spirit that underlie these essays: the doctrine that “there originally is not a single thing”; “the Middle Path of the Non-Duality principle”; and the Seon wisdom of “gratification through renouncement.” |
