| 抄録 | 『삼국유사』의 다양한 설화 중 불교 내적으로 가장 중요한 비중을 차지하는 것은 성불을 위한 구도 설화라고 할 수 있다. 이 중에서는 여성의 이미지와 역할에 있어서 다른 문헌 속에서 좀처럼 보기 어려운 독특한 특성이 있다. 대표적으로 노비 욱면과 같이 여성이 성불하여 날아간다던가, 원효나 노힐부득, 달달박박 같은 남성 구도자가 여성으로부터 분별의 눈을 시험받는 이야기 등이 그것이다.
본 연구에서는 『삼국유사』 구도 설화 속에서 여성의 이미지와 역할을 분석하고 이를 티벳 밀교의 전기문과 비교하여 그 유사성을 검토해 보았다. 검토된 문헌은 아바야닷따(Abhayadatta)의 전기문과 따라나타(Tāranātha)의 저술들이다. 티벳 밀교 문헌은 『삼국유사』와의 연관성이 거의 다뤄지지 않았다. 본 연구의 주제는 이 문헌들이 『삼국유사』와 역사적인 영향 관계가 있음을 논증하는 것은 아니며, 여성의 이미지와 역할에 한정하여 그 내용에 있어서 유사성이 있음을 확인하는 데 있다.
여성의 이미지와 역할은 3가지 주제로 분류하였다. 첫째, 깨달음을 얻은 여성이 하늘로 날아오른 이미지인데, 여성 노비 욱면과 마니바드라(Maņibhadrā)를 통해 살펴보았다. 두 번째는 분별의 시각을 시험하는 여성으로서, 노힐부득과 달달박박, 그리고 관음을 친견하지 못한 원효 등이 전형적인 사례에 해당하고, 이에 해당하는 내용은 붓다구햐와 붓다샨띠, 그리고 아바야까라굽타의 전기에서 볼 수 있었다. 세 번째는 남성 구도자의 조력자로서, 아내와 어머니 그리고 여신이다. 광덕과 조신의 아내, 진정의 어머니 등의 모습을 티벳 밀교 전기문에서 사라하, 띨로빠의 아내, 그리고 깜발라의 어머니의 사례와 비교하였다. 구도를 돕는 여신들은 『삼국유사』에서는 변재천녀, 관음보살, 티벳 문헌에서는 주로 다끼니들이었다.
『삼국유사』 구도 설화에서의 이와 같은 여성 이미지와 역할은 티벳 밀교 전기문에서 각각 유사한 내용이 발견되는 점을 확인하였다. 이 유사성은 『삼국유사』의 구도 설화가 티벳 밀교 수행과 공유하는 특성을 배경으로 한다고 추론된다. 즉, 낮은 신분의 수행자들, 세속과의 관계가 중요시되는 재가주의, 그리고 성취자들의 신비한 능력 강조 등이 그것이다. 이러한 맥락에서 여성의 새로운 역할론을 포함한 유사한 이미지들의 함의를 고찰하였다.
The Samgukyusa contains various tales, but among them, the tales of enlightenment are considered to occupy the most important proportion within Buddhism. These tales have a unique characteristic rarely seen in literature with different images and roles of women. Representatively, there are stories like Uk-myeon where an enlightened woman fly up into the sky, and male ascetics such as Wonhyo, Nohilbudeok, and Daldalbakbak are tested for enlightenment by woman.
In this study, women’s image and role in the tales of enlightenment of the Samgukyusa were analyzed and compared with the biography of Tibetan Buddhism to examine the similarities. The literature reviewed include the biographical text of Abhayadatta written in the 12th century and the writings of Tāranātha compiled in the 17th century.
Although the Tibetan esoteric literature rarely deals with the relationship between the Samgukyusa, the Tibetan esoteric texts, featuring low-status achievers, the mystical abilities of Tantric yoga practitioners, and the high status of women, share the orientation of the Samgukyusa. However, this study’s aim is not to argue the historical relationship between the Samgukyusa and Tibetan esoteric literature, but to confirm that there are similarities in Buddhist literature when compared to the two cultures, limited to women's images and roles.
Women's images and roles are classified into three themes. First, the image of an enlightened woman flying into the sky; second, the tester of men's capacity for enlightenment; and third, the case of a wife, mother, and goddess as a facilitator to men's enlightenment. Subsequently, similar contents were confirmed in the Tibetan esoteric texts related to the subject, respectively. |
