| 抄録 | 이 글은 원효의 『불설아미타경소』 번역들에 보이는 오역을 중심으로 원효의 정토사상을 살펴보고자 한다. 물론, 정토사상의 전모일 수는 없겠으나 몇 가지 양상들은 새롭게 드러날 것이다. 종래 원효의 정토사상 이해는 거의 전적으로 『무량수경종요』를 중심으로 이루어졌다는 점에서, 이 연구는 원효 정토사상 이해에 새로운 지평을 열어보고자 한다. 오역이 발생한 것은 정토사상에 대한 깊이 있는 이해를 역자들이 갖추지 못했기 때문이다. 그러므로 오역이 왜 발생하였으며, 어떤 점에서 오역인지를 검토할 것이고, 어떻게 번역하는 것이 올바른 것인지를 제시하게 될 것이다. 종래 『불설아미타경소』에 대한 번역은 [조명기 역본](1988), [정목 역본](2015), 그리고 [김호성 외 역본](2017)의 셋이 발표되어서 읽혀왔다. 이들을 정밀하게 검토한 결과, 대의(大意)에서는 ‘兩尊’, ‘煩惱之林’의 두 가지, 종치(宗致)에서는 ‘衆生世間淸淨’, ‘且止乘論’의 두 가지, 입문해석(入文解釋)에서는 ‘所以得知’, ‘不至心爲至心’, ‘退菩提心, 退心, 而退’의 세 가지에서 오역이 발생하였음을 알게 되었다. 이러한 오역사례를 분석해 볼 때, 대의와 종치에서의 오역은 전부 세친의 『무량수경우파제사원생게』에 대한 이해가 부족해서 생긴 것이었다. 입문해석에서의 오역은 모두 원효가 발보리심(發菩提心)을 왕생의 정인이라고 하는 것과 관련된다. 이 부분에 대한 원효의 논술에는 불교논리학의 논증식이 적용되어 있으며, 논쟁의 형식을 자유롭게 활용하고 있었다. 역자들이 그러한 부분에 대한 충분한 인식을 하지 못하고 있다는 점에서 오역을 범할 수밖에 없었다. 이러한 오역사례의 재검토를 통해서 볼 때, 원효의 정토사상 안에는 세친과 담란과의 영향관계를 명확히 할 필요가 있다는 점, 발보리심을 정인으로 주장하는 점에 있어서는 결코 양보가 없었다는 점을 알 수 있었다.
Wŏnhyo’s Amit’a-gyŏng so is a basic text for understanding his thought on Pure Land Buddhism with Muryangsu-gyŏng chongyo(Doctrinal essentials of the larger Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtra). But Amit’a-gyŏng so has been underestimated until now. Its direct evidence is that Amit’a-gyŏng so has not been translated perfectly. Up to now, even though Jo Myŏng Gi, Ven. Jungmok, and Kim Ho Sung and six others translated, there are some problems on Amit’a-gyŏng so in Korean Version. This article aims to inspect the cases of mistranslation, propose proper translation, and investigate the causes of bringing about mistranslation. Through this process, I can get some new understandings for Wŏnhyo’s thought for Pure Land Buddhism as follows. Firstly, Wŏnhyo agrees with Shandao(善導, 613-681) in the viewpoint in which they regards Pure Land Buddhism as Teaching of Two Buddhas. Secondly, I found out that Wŏnhyo’s understanding on Amit’a-gyŏng(shorter Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtra) was influenced from Vasubandhu(世親)’s Treatise on the Pure Land definitely. But when Wŏnhyo explained his view on the directing of virtue for our return to this world, he has same view with Tanluan(曇鸞, 488-554) but not with Vasubandhu. Thirdly, Wŏnhyo’s attitude in which he always try to reconcile the contradiction has consistent position on his Pure Land Buddhism. Fourthly, I found out that Wŏnhyo never gave up his standpoint to consider bodhicittotpāda(bringing out one’s mind to become a Buddha) as direct cause. Fifthly, I re-ascertained that Wŏnhyo used his knowledge on Buddhist Logic and argument skill in Amit’a-gyŏng(shorter Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtra) freely. Sixthly, I understood that Wŏnhyo evaluated śrāvakas in Pure Land as bodhisattvas who had degraded his state to save sentient beings. In his viewpoint I found out the effect from Amitabha’s 22th vow in which the thought of returning-pariṇāma(directing of virtue for our return to this world) has been spoken. In this article, I could evaluate the same importance between Muryangsu-gyŏng chongyo and Amit’a-gyŏng so for understanding Wŏnhyo’s thought on Pure Land Buddhism more accurately.
