| 抄録 | 일반적으로 모임이나 조직을 의미하는 ‘결사’라는 말은 불교사 안에서는 독특한 의미를 갖는 술어로서 거듭났다. 예컨대, 정혜결사, 백련결사 등에서 우리는 그 의미를 유추할 수 있다. 그러나 ‘결사’라는 개념을 어떻게 정의해야 하는지에 대해서는 무관심해왔다. 이에 나는 구체적인 결사를 떠나서 결사 그 자체의 일반적 정의를 물어보았다. 그리하여 「결사의 근대적 전개양상」에서 “이념을 같이하는 사람들이 먼저 스스로 수행을 하면서 불교교단을 새롭게 개혁하고자 실천한 공동체 운동”으로 정의하였다. 이러한 정의에는 결사를 ㉠수도운동, ㉡개혁운동, ㉢이념운동, 그리고 ㉣공동체운동으로 파악하고 있음이 반영되었다. 그런데, 나는 조계종을 중심으로 한 현대 한국불교의 전개과정을 살펴보면서 이러한 내 자신의 정의를 재검토할 필요성을 느끼게 되었다. 무엇보다도 결사에는 근본적으로(혹은 결과적으로) 개혁적이라는 의미를 갖고 있음은 사실이지만, 근래 종단개혁을 부르짖으면서 종단정치에 참여하는 움직임과 결사를 구분할 필요가 있었기 때문이다. 종단개혁을 부르짖고 현실적으로 宗團事에 참여하게 되면 반드시 거기에는 권력화가 수반되기 때문이다. 그것은 이미 결사정신의 망각 내지 이탈을 가져오게 된다. 그러한 운동까지 결사로 부를 수는 없다고 보았기 때문이다. 오히려 결사정신의 측면에서 볼 때, ‘참여 속의 개혁’과 그것이 필연적으로 초래할 정치화의 길과는 반대로 결사는 脫정치/脫권력의 길(=수도의 길)을 걸어갔기 때문이 아닌가. 이러한 생각의 반영으로 나는 결사를 “불교교단의 문제상황을 극복하기 위한 노력의 하나로서 직접 그 상황 속에 참여하여 개혁하고자 하는 대신, 그 상황으로부터 避隱하여 먼저 스스로 수행함으로써 장차 그러한 상황을 극복하고자 하는 일”로서 재정의하였다. “그것은 권력이나 정치를 벗어나고자 하는 것이므로, 종단의 제도나 조직을 활용하지 않는 순수 민간, 在野 차원이어야 한다. 脫권력 내지 脫정치를 지향하므로 반드시 2인 이상의 모임이 아니어도 무방”한 것으로 결론지었다. 2인 이상의모임이 아니라도 무방하다는 데에서 ‘홀로결사’도 가능하리라 보았다. 이는 사실상의 결사의 해체에 다름 아니다. 형식보다도 정신이 더욱 중요하다고 보기 때문이며, 결사정신이 살아있는 곳에 결사는 존재한다고 보기 때문이다.
The term Gyŏlsa(結社, Jiéshè), which means generally ‘association’, has the special meaning in the Buddhist history. We can easily suppose it from the historical events, such as Baekryŏn Gyŏlsa(白蓮結社, Báilián Jiéshè) and Jŏnghae Gyŏlsa(定慧結社, Dìnghuì Jiéshè) etc. My focus, however, is not on the specific meaning but on the general definition. It is also derived from the historical events though. From the aspects of modern development of Gyŏlsa, I have made the definition: “The Community which is grouped by people who are sharing the ideology, having been training themselves, in order to reform the Buddhist System.” This definition is based on these four key words such as practice of austerities, reformation, ideology, and community. My definition, however, is needed to review by himself when he observed the Korean Buddhist development. Gyŏlsa should be differed from the participation of the secular Buddhist affairs with crying for a reform. The latter would be accompanied with the institutional power, and it can not be any more Gyŏlsa. Accordingly it is defined again, “It is the efforts that one who wants to reform the problematic Buddhist System, train oneself in order to recover it, instead of participating it directly. It is free from any secular powers, so that need not to be grouped.” Gyŏlsa should be away from the secular affairs, so that could be a hope for people. That is the reason that I suggest ‘Holo Gyŏlsa’, or Gyŏlsa of being alone. It is actually inconsistent in the literal sense of the word just like the term, ‘Holo Gyŏlsa’. However it never breaks Buddhist harmony, rather it would be helpful for them. There could be numerous opponents against this writing. It is, however, not the point to find and criticize my faults. Our concern must be on these questions, “What is the way for the Korean Buddhist Community to be free from the institutional power?”, “How cannot the reformer downfall to be another object of reformation?”, and “How can they keep their original intentions?” I am always open to be criticized, what I would not give for to be helpful to our Buddhist Community.
