| 抄録 | 우리나라에서는 통일신라 초에 천수관음 관련경전이 수용된 이후, 천수관음 신앙이 널리 성행하면서 천수관음상이 다수 조성되었다. 그러나 천수관음 신앙의 성행에 비해 현재 남아있는 작품은 많지 않아서, 조각은 고려시대의 천수관음상 2점(국립중앙박물관 및 프랑스 국립기메동양미술관소장), 회화는 고려시대 및 조선전, 후기의 천수관음도가 몇 점 남아있을 뿐이다. 우리나라 불교에서 『천수경』이 차지하는 위치를 생각해 볼 때, 천수관음도와 조각이 유난히 적은 것은 매우 흥미로운 사실이다. 본고에서는 먼저 천수관음의 도상이 어떻게 기원하였으며 전개되었는가를 고찰하고, 우리나라의 천수관음신앙과 천수관음도의 현황 및 특징 등을 살펴보았다. 중국에서는 당-송대에 천수관음신앙이 크게 성행하면서 돈황 및 사천성의 석굴사원을 중심으로 조각과 불화가 다수 제작되었는데, 도상적적으로 1面 혹은 11面 3目, 40(42)手에 28部衆 또는 功德天과 婆藪仙, 餓鬼와 窮叟 등이 함께 표현되는 것이 특징이다. 반면 우리나라에서는 28부중, 바수선과 공덕천, 아귀와 궁수 대신 『법화경』 관세음보살보문품의 諸難장면 및 『화엄경』의 선재동자가 표현되거나 준제관음과 함께 표현되곤 한다. 이것은 천수관음이라는 밀교적 변화관음을 조성하면서도 우리에게 친근한 관음의 이미지, 즉 선재동자와 함께 표현되는 수월관음의 이미지 또는 갖가지 어려움에서 중생을 구제해주는 『법화경』의 應身的 이미지를 투영한 것으로, 이것이 바로 우리나라 천수관음도상의 특징이라 할 수 있다.
Since some Buddhist bibles related to Sahasra-bhuja Avalokiteśvara had been introduced by Great Monk Euisang in the early United Silla age, Sahasra-bhuja Avalokiteśvara belief was prevailing until the end of the Joseon age, and hence sculptures and paintings of Sahasra-bhuja Avalokiteśvara were created from earlier times. The sculptures and paintings were for memorial services for the death in some cases, and for worship after enshrined in temples in others. However, there are not many works left so far for the past prosperity of Sahasra-bhuja Avalokiteśvara belief. We only have Sahasra-bhuja Avalokiteśvara sculptures from the Goryeo age (owned by the National Museum of Korea and Musée Guimet in France) and a few paintings from the early and late Joseon ages. Given the fact that Water-Moon Avalokiteśvara paintings were prevailing in Goryeo and various paintings as well as White-robe Avalokiteśvara paintings were in fashion in Joseon, this is a stunningly exceptional situation. This paper first examines how the icons of Sahasra-bhuja Avalokiteśvara were originatedand developed, and then explores the characteristics of Chinese Sahasra-bhuja Avalokiteśvara. As a result, it is found out that many Sahasra-bhuja Avalokiteśvara paintings and sculptures are left in places like cave temples in Dunhuang and Sichuan, China as Sahasra-bhuja Avalokiteśvarabelief enjoyed its prosperity in the Tang and Song ages. Chinese Sahasra-bhuja Avalokiteśvara paintings’ iconic characteristics include the illustration of Sahasra-bhuja Avalokiteśvara with one face or 11 faces and three eyes plus 40 (42) hands and 28 Devas, or the expression of Sahasra-bhuja Avalokiteśvara together with Lakshmi, Vasmitra, famished demons, poor man etc. Unlike Chinese and Japanese ones, Korean Sahasra-bhuja Avalokiteśvara paintings show characteristics in that it expresses Sahasra-bhuja Avalokiteśvara along with Avataṃsaka Sūtra, the scene of disasters in Puṇḍarīka Sūtra, and Sahasra-bhuja Avalokiteśvara together with Cundebhagavati. This can be seen as projecting friendly images of Sahasra-bhuja Avalokiteśvara, i.e. images of Water-Moon Avalokiteśvara being with Sutra, or transforming images in Puṇḍarīka Sūtra where he saved people from all kinds of disasters while creating Sahasra-bhuja Avalokiteśvara, a transformed Tantric Avalokiteśvara. |
