| 抄録 | 본 고찰은 화엄사 근현대 역사의 사격을 화엄사 고승인 진진응과 이동헌을 통해서 살펴 본 고찰이다. 한 사찰의 寺格은 역사, 문화, 사상, 경제, 지역사회에서의 위상, 교단내부에서 차지하는 위상 등 다양한 측면에서 검토가 가능하다. 그러나 본 고찰에서 근대기, 현대기 화엄사 역사의 주인공이라고 부를 수 있는 진진응과 이동헌의 생애를 조망하면서 그 단서를 찾고자 하였다. 이를 위해서 필자는 일제하 불교에서 진진응의 생애, 한국 현대불교사에서의 이동헌의 생애를 정리, 분석하였다. 그 결과 이들이 근현대 화엄사 역사의 주체임을 알 수 있었다. 이런 입장에서는 필자는 근대기 화엄사가 30본산에서 누락되었지만 진진응을 중심으로 화엄사 대중 승려들의 단결된 노력으로 본사로 승격된 역사적 사실을 확인하였다. 이를 통해 조선후기, 개항기의 화엄사의 역사 및 사격을 재조명해야 한다는 당위를 만나게 되었다. 한편 이동헌은 근대기 고승인 백용성의 상좌로서 용성문도이었다. 그는 백용성 계승, 전법 문제에 지대한 관심, 노력을 기울인 당사자임이 밝혀졌다. 이런 배경에서 1970년부터 지금껏 이동헌의 상좌, 문손들이 화엄사에 주석함으로써 화엄사가 용성문도의 거점 사찰이 되었다. 그러므로 추후에는 고려, 조선시대 화엄사의 역사 및 문화와 이동헌의 문도들이 주석한 이후의 역사 및 문화와의 조화, 계승 문제를 분석해야 할 것으로 보인다. 즉 역사계승, 전승, 인식의 문제가 나온 것이다. 본 고찰은 진진응, 이동헌의 연구가 척박한 배경에서 집필되어 적지 않은 한계가 있다. 그리고 진진응, 이동헌 이외의 승려들에 대한 연구도 긴급함이 요청된다. 그러나 본 고찰이 근현대 화엄사 역사, 문화 탐구에 촉매제가 될 것이라 본다.
This study examined temple status of post modern history of Hwaeumsa temple through Jin Jin Eung and Lee Dong Heon, high priests of Hwaeumsa temple. Temple status of a temple can be reviewed in various aspects such as history, culture, ideology, economy, status in a local community and status enhanced in the religious order. However, this paper sought its clue by viewing life of Jin Jin Eung and Lee Dong Heon, who are regarded as main characters of history of Hwaeumsa temple in post modern and contemporary period. In order to carry on the research, the paper summarized and analyzed life of Jin Jin Eung under Buddhism during Japanese colonial period and life of Lee Dong Heon in Korean comtemporary Buddhism history. As a result, it has been found out that these people are the main characters of history of post modern Hwaeumsa temple. In this aspect, this paper confirmed a historical fact that although Hwaeumsa temple in the post modern period has been left out among the 30 grand temples, Hwaeumsa temple has raised its status as a grand temple with solid endeavors of majority high priests of Hwaeumsa temple with Jin Jin Eung being the leader. Therefore, in the enlightenment period of late Choseon, they have encountered a group which insists history and status of temple of Hwaeumsa must be re-examined. On the other hand, Lee Dong Heon was a Yongseongmundo and a monk who was first in line to succeed Baek Yong Seong, a high priest in post modern period. It was discovered that he was the one who had great interests in succession and tactic issues about Baek Yong Seong and put efforts. In such background, followers and disciplines of Lee Dong Heon settled in Hwaeumsa temple since 1970s until nowadays and Hwaeumsa temple became a base temple of Yongseongmundo. Ultimately, history and culture of Hwaeumsa temple in Koryeo and Choseon dynasty as well as history and culture since settlement of followers of Lee Dong Heon and their harmony and succession issues must be analyzed in the future. In other words, issues on historical succession, transmission and recognition have emerged. This study encountered more or less restrictions because it was written in a barren background of research on Jin Jin Eung and Lee Dong Heon. Also research on other high priests apart from Jin Jin Eung and Lee Dong Heon is urgently needed. Nevertheless, this study will become a facilitator in research of history and culture of Hwaeumsa temple in the post modern period. |
