| 抄録 | Celibate monastics affiliated with the original Jogye Order officially established in 1941 developed the Purification Buddhist Movement, 1954-70, removed married monastics from the order and in 1962 officially established the current Jogye Order only for themselves. Kim Ilta (1929-99) conducted theoretical research on orthopraxy (rules, precepts and rituals) under the guidance of Kim Jaun (1911-1992) from 1953, theoretically backed up the movement, completely restored celibate monasticism in the order, established the ordination system with other vinaya masters at the order’s level in 1981, and implemented the system in the order since then. When he referred to orthopraxis principles included in the monastic rules of the Dharmagupataka’s Four Part Vinaya of Indian Buddhism and the bodhisattva precepts of Brahmā Net Sūtra of the Great Vehicle, while he intentionally ignored some principles of decentralized monastic management, non-arbitrariness, separation between religion and state, harmony, non-violence, and honorable poverty, he highly emphasized other principles of celibacy, no worldly skills, no-drinking of intoxicants, not eating of five pungent plants, and vegetarianism. He politically and sectarianistically utilized his selected principles as the theoretical and practical weapons of the movement. Because he was basically conservative and did not progressively interpret the orthopraxis principles in rules and precepts, he could not react to various social issues which might happen in contemporary Korean situations. So, he did not and could not apply the principles to the issues such as democracy, equality, human rights, environmentalism, labor rights, reunification, civil rights, social justice, anti-imperialism, animal rights, and so on, but was mainly concerned with the religious issues of celibacy and vegetarianism and realized celibate and vegetarian monasticism in the religious order.
1941년 공식적으로 출범한 원 조계종 소속의 소수파 비구승 그룹은 불교정화운동(1954-70)을 전개하여 비구승 그룹과 대처승 그룹이 공주(共住)하는 원 조계종에서 다수파 대처승 그룹을 제거하였고, 비구승단인 현 조계종을 1962년 공식적으로 창종하였다. 김일타(1929-99)는 1953년부터 김자운(1911-92)의 지도로 계율, 의식 그리고 복식을 본격적으로 연구하였다. 그는 다른 율사들과 함께 불교정화운동을 이론적으로 뒷받침하여 현 조계종의 비구승단을 정초하였으며, 1981년에는 조계종 차원의 수계제도를 확립하였다. 한국불교 실천규범의 이론적 토대를 형성하는 『사분율』 비구계와 『범망경』 보살계에 포함되어 있는 실천 원리들을 참고할 때, 김일타는 지역승단의 자치운영, 일관성, 정교분리, 화합, 비폭력, 그리고 청빈으로 대표되는 실천원리들을 의도적으로 그리고 정치적으로 무시하였고, 독신, 음주, 미신타파, 오신채 금지, 그리고 채식으로 대표되는 실천원리들을 특별히 그리고 선별적으로 강조하였다. 이러한 과정을 통해서 김일타와 율사들은 원 조계종이 채택한 대처와 식육의 실천원리들을 비판하여 독신과 채식을 옹호하는 현 조계종의 승단을 확립하였다. 기본적으로 보수적인 율사였기 때문에, 김일타는 축자적으로 계율을 해석하였다. 그는 현대한국 사회상황에서 일어날 수밖에 없었던 민주, 민족, 자유, 평등, 인권, 노동권, 환경, 통일, 민권, 사회정의, 그리고 동물권과 같은 다양한 사회 이슈들에 적극 대응하지 않았고, 독신 그리고 채식과 같은 종교적 이슈에 주로 관심을 가졌다. 그는 또한 다른 율사들과 함께 종단적 차원에서 현 조계종의 수계 및 포살의식 그리고 승려복식을 표준화하여 비구승단의 실천규범을 체계화하였다. |
