| 抄録 | 사형인 동산스님(1890-1965)과 사제인 자운스님(1911-1992)과 더불어 스승인 용성스님(1864-1940)의 계율정신을 충실히 계승하였음에도 불구하고, 고암스님(1899-1988)은 사형제들과 일정 정도 다른 방향에서 아래와 같이 스승의 계율정신을 실현하려고 노력하였다. 용성스님은 일제 강점기 동안 계율의 입장에서 일제의 대처식육 정책을 반대하여 한국불교의 비구와 채식주의 전통의 복원을 추구하였고, 고암스님을 포함하여 그의 제자들은 해방 이후 스승의 유지를 충실히 받들어 불교정화운동(1954-1970)을 전개하였고 일본화된 원 조계종(1941-1962)의 대처와 식육 전통을 극복하여 현 조계종(1962-현재)을 통해 한국불교의 비구와 채식 전통을 회복하였다. 그렇지만 그들은 사회적 맥락에서 계율을 해석하지 않아 각종 사회 이슈에 거의 반응하지 않았고, 특히 이승만(1875-1965)의 민간독재 정권과 박정희(1917-1979)의 군사독재의 도움으로 불교정화운동을 성공시켰기 때문에, 그들은 그 당시의 최대 사회이슈인 반독재와 민주화의 실현에 적극 참여할 수 없었다. 고암스님은 개방적으로 그리고 탄력적으로 율맥을 해석하여 근현대 한국불교의 양대 율맥인 고심율맥과 대은율맥을 상호 보완적 관계로 간주한 것 같고, 율맥 자체 보다는 율사 개개인의 실질적인 계율 수지에 좀 더 포커스를 맞춘 것 같다. 사형인 동산스님은 계율을 응용하여 승단의 정화에 전념하였고 사제인 자운스님은 율장을 연구하여 종단 차원에서 각종 의식을 체계화한 반면, 고암스님은 불자와 승려 개개인의 계율 정신의 고양에 진력하였다. 그리고 스님이 불자 또는 승려 개인 차원에서 그리고 종단 차원에서 주로 계율을 해석하고 적용하였음에도 불구하고, 우리는 광의로 말해 한국불교 그리고 협의로 말해 조계종이라는 틀 속에 스님의 계율사상을 가두어둘 필요가 없이 현 사회의 시대 역사적 맥락에서 그의 계율사상을 적극 해석하여 각종 사회적 이슈들에 대응시킬 필요가 있다.
Although Goam (1899-1988) loyally inherited his master Yongseong’s (1864-1940) spirit of precepts and vinaya along with his dharma brothers Dongsan (1890-1965) and Jaun (1911-1992), he made efforts to realize his master’s vision in ways quite different from his master’s other disciples. While Yongseong opposed the imperial Japanese government which imposed married and non-vegetarian monasticism on Korean Buddhists and sought the restoration of Korean Buddhism’s celibate and vegetarian tradition during Japanese occupation, 1910-1945, his followers, including Goam, developed the Purification Buddhist Movement, 1954-1970, thereby removing married monastics from the Jogye Order and finally recovering the Korean Buddhist tradition. However, because the disciples did not interpret precepts and vinaya in a social context, they did not respond to social issues, particularly democratization and opposition to the despotism imposed on Koreans by the civilian dictator Rhee Syngman (1875-1965) and the military dictator Park Chung-hee (1917-1979). Goam flexibly interpreted the vinaya lineages and considered as being inclusive and complementary two major vinaya lineages of Guxin (1535-1615) and Daeeun (1790-1841) adopted and inherited among modern Korean Buddhists. He did not emphasize a vinaya lineage(s) but considered how seriously and actually each vinaya master preserved precepts and vinaya. While his elder dharma brother Dongsan applied precepts and vinaya and restored the traditional monasticism of Korean Buddhism in the Jogye Order and his younger dharma brother Jaun extensively conducted research on vinaya texts and officially standardized various rituals in the order, Goam required monastics and Buddhists to preserve precepts and vinaya mainly at an individual level, not so much at an organizational level. So, we can conclude that Goam placed more emphasis on precepts at the individual level than his master and his dharma brothers who more seriously applied vinaya to the organization level than Goam. In conclusion, we need to critically interpret precepts and vinaya which Goam mainly used in individual and religious contexts and extensively apply them to a broader social context in order to widely respond to various social issues today. |
