| 抄録 | 東軒完奎(1896∼1983)에 대한 연구는 아직도 시원적인 단계이다. 동헌스님은 충청남도 대덕군 기성면 산직리 150번지에서 탄생하였다. 일찍이 한학과 광동학교를 졸업하고 1919년 24세에 처음으로 용성스님을 만났으나 1924년 29세에 용성스님을 은사로 출가하여 참선수행정진 하였다. 용성스님을 시봉하면서 독립운동에도 참여하였으나 크게 알려지지는 못하였다. 용성스님으로부터 깨달음을 인가 받고, 1936년에는 傳法을 받아 부처님으로부터 69대의 정법안장을 계승하였다. 해방 후에는 불교정화운동과 대한불교조계종 재건에 전력을 다하였다. 종단의 정화로 인하여 접수한 사찰의 주지를 맡아 전통사찰을 일신시켰다. 또한 용성스님의 유업을 계승하고 현창하기 위해 1969년에는 재단법인 대각회를 설립하여 초대 이사장을 맡아 재단을 발전시켰다. 자신이 창건한 부산 금수선원을 재단의 기본재산으로 기증하였고, 용성스님의 번역과 저술의 자료들을 온전히 보존하여 기증하였다. 이러한 자료로 인해 오늘날 용성연구에 초석을 마련하였다. 스님은 경론에 밝았으나 捨敎入禪 후에는 참선수행에만 전력하였지 평생을 법상에 올라 법문을 하지 않았다. 항상 제자인 도문스님이 법문하는 것을 증명할 뿐이었다. 또한 용성스님의 海東律을 계승하여 종단의 금강계단에는 항상 아사리로 참여하여 증명하였다. 서예에 능하여 명필에 속하였으며, 누구나 원하는 사람이 있으면 아끼지 않고 서예 작품을 보시하였다. 스님의 업적 중 가장 돋보이는 것은 용성스님의 유업을 계승할 수 있는 인재의 양성이었다. 대각사상에 일생을 바친 불심도문스님과 그 후대인 필자를 비롯한 많은 법손들을 배출하여 연구에 박차를 가하고 있다. 특히 동헌스님이 보존해 온 용성스님의 번역서와 저술 및 手擇本 등을 중심으로 『백용성대종사 총서』를 출판하고, 전산화하는데 큰 공로를 인정하지 않을 수 없다.
Studies on Dongheonwangyu (1896∼1983) are still in their primitive stage. Dongheon was born at 150, Sanjik-ri, Giseong-myeon, Daedeok-gun, Chungcheongnam-do. He graduated from Gwangdong School where he studied Chinese classics and then met the monk, Yongseong for the first time in his life at the age of 24. He then became a Buddhist monk at the age of 29 under his direction in 1924. He participated in the independence movement against Japan while serving Yongseong but his activities were not widely recognized. He was recognized for his religious enlightenment by Yongseong and then succeeded the 69th Jeongbeopanjang from Buddha by receiving Yongseong’s lessons. After liberation, he dedicated himself to purification movement for Buddhism in Korea and reconstruction of the Korean Buddhist Jogye Order. He renovated traditional temples which were accepted into the Order by a chief monk of those temples. In addition, he established a foundation called Daegakhoe to inherit and shed light on unfinished works of Yongseong and developed the foundation as its first chairman. He donated Geumsuseonwon Temple established by himself to the foundation together with translations and works of Yongseong that he had preserved which became the basic assets of the foundation. Such materials became a cornerstone for studies on Yongseong today. He had in-depth understanding of Buddha’s scriptures and related studies but he did not provide teaching for them since he decided to focus on meditation. He only demonstrated what his disciple Domun had teached. In addition, he succeeded Yongseong’s Haedongseo (海東律) and participated in the events of the Order as Acarya for demonstration. He was a skilled calligrapher and was considered the master. But he was always willing to give his calligraphy to those who want it. His most prestigious achievement was that he developed many disciples to inherit unfinished works of Yongseong. His disciples including Domun who devoted his entire life to the study on the theories of Daegak and other ones such as the author are all devoted researchers on Buddhism. In particular, it should be noted that he was a great contributor in publication and computerization of the “Book Series of Great Teacher, Baekyongseong (Baekyongseong Daejongsa Chongseo)” based on translations and works of Yongseong that he had preserved. |
