| 抄録 | 백용성의 사상은 한마디로 ‘大覺思想’이라고 할 수 있다. 그는 자신이 터득한 ‘깨달음(覺)’을 세상에 널리 펼치기 위해 ‘大覺敎’라는 새로운 교단을 창립했다. 그가 말한 ‘大覺’이란 곧 本覺, 始覺, 究竟覺을 일컫는다. 본각이란 佛과 祖師가 나기 전부터의 본래 깨달음 자체를 말하고, 시각이란 일체중생의 성품은 본래 깨달음임을 깨달았다는 것이며, 구경각이란 본각과 시각이 둘이 아닌 하나로 완성된 상태를 의미한다. 이것이 백용성의 大覺思想이다. 백용성은 자신이 터득한 이 대각사상을 전파하는데 일생을 바쳤다. 화과원은 농장이나 과수원이라기보다 수행도량, 즉 ‘수도원’이나 총림의 성격에 가깝다. 백용성이 꿈꾸었던 화과원은 禪․敎․律을 兼修하는 청정한 수행도량, 즉 叢林이었다. 실제로 이곳에 禪院이 개설되어 운영되었다. 조선불교선종총림 종주 백용성이 1938년에 발급한 安居證書가 남아있다. 이러한 증거을 통해 볼 때 화과원은 외부와 차단된 ‘수도원’과 같은 역할을 담당했던 것으로 보인다. 백용성이 입적한 이후에도 화과원은 그 제자들이 치열하게 수행하고 佛學을 연찬했던 수행도량이었다. 백용성이 만년에 저술한 세 가지 종류의 책을 통해 그의 불교관을 엿볼 수 있다. 그는 『晴空圓日』에서 자신이 창립한 대각교의 핵심교리를 체계적으로 정리했다. 그리고 『吾道의 眞理』와 『吾道는 道』라는 소책자는 대각교에서 말하는 大覺의 의미가 무엇인가를 보다 쉽게 서술한 것이다. 특히 『오도의 진리』와 『오도는 각』은 대각교가 해체된 이후에 저술되었다. 대각교는 1936년 경 해체되었고, 1938년 朝鮮佛敎禪宗에 편입되었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 백용성은 병든 몸으로 자신의 대각사상을 널리 보급하기 위해 『오도의 진리』와 『오도는 각』을 저술했다. 이를 통해 백용성이 비록 당시 여러 가지 사정으로 인해 『대각교』의 문을 닫을 수밖에 없었지만, 끝까지 대각사상에 대한 신념을 버리지 않았음을 알 수 있다.
Baek Yongseong's thoughts can be described ultimately as 'Daegaksasang(Supreme Enlightenment)'. He established a new Buddhist order 'Daegakgyo(Supreme Enlightenment Foundation)' for the purpose of propagating 'enlightenment' he had reached. 'Supreme Enlightenment' he mentioned contains bongak(本覺), sigak(始覺) and gugyeonggak(究竟覺). Bongak means the original enlightenment itself before Buddha and the buddhist master were born. Sigak indicates we have grasped that the nature of all sattva(sentient beings) is originally enlightenment. And gugyeonggak signifies that bongak and sigak are not two but one complete state. Baek Yongseong dedicated his whole life to the propagation of Daegaksasang he had mastered. Hwagwawon is rather similar to a 'Buddhist monastery' or monastic teaching center than to a farm or orchard in its nature. Hwagwawon Back Yongseong dreamed of was a pure and immaculate practice hall, a monastic teaching center in which zen meditation, doctrines and vinaya(orders) were trained and taught all together. In fact, a meditation hall was opened and operated there. A retreat certificate issued in the year of 1938 by Baek Yongseaong, the supreme patriarch of Seonjong Chonglim of Joseon Buddhism, has been handed down to date. With these evidential documents, it seems that Hwagwawon played a role of 'monastery' secluded from the outside. Even after Baek Yongseong passed away, Hwagwawon was a practice hall where his disciples intensely cultivated and pursued Buddhist studies. His view of Buddhism can be grasped through the three books Baek Yongseong wrote in his late years. He put systematically in order the core doctrines of Daegakgyo he had established in Cheonggongwonil(Pure Sky and Round Sun). And in booklets The Truth of Odo and Odo Is Do, he plainly described the meaning of Supreme Enlightenment preached in Daegakgyo. It is needless to say these were written to propagate the idea of Supreme Enlightenment widely. The Truth of Odo and Odo Is Do were especially written after Daegakgyo had been dissolved. Daegakgyo was disbanded around the year 1936 and incorporated in Joseon Buddhism Seonjong in 1938. Nevertheless, Baek Yongseong created The Truth of Odo and Odo Is Do on his sickbed in order to spread the idea of Supreme Enlightenment. We understand from these facts that though Daegakgyo had to be dissolved due to various unfavorable circumstances, Baek Yongseong didn't give up his belief in Supreme Enlightenment to the end.
