| 抄録 | 불국사가 오늘날 우리가 볼 수 있는 모습으로 변화하게 되는 것은 1969년 5월∼1973년 7월까지 진행된 불국사 복원공사를 통해서이다. 하지만 신라의 불교문화를 대표하는 사찰로서의 불국사가 아니라, 현대 한국 불교를 대표하는 사찰 중의 하나로서 불국사를 인식하고자 한다면 불국사 선원의 개설과 그 전개과정에 주목할 필요가 있다. 그리고 불국사 선원의 개설과 수좌양성에 전력을 다했던 월산스님의 가풍과 불국사 선원의 특징을 이해할 필요가 있다. 본 논문은 그러한 점에 주목하여 ‘불국사 복원공사’와 ‘불국사 선원의 개설 및 운영’이 서로 다른 역사문화적 배경 위에 서 있는 것임을 해명하였다. 곧 창건 이후부터 1973년에 마무리되는 불국사복원공사에 이르기까지 불국사 가람 조영에 중심이 된 사상적 토대와 불국사 선원 건립의 사상적 토대가 서로 다른 점에 주목하였다. 그리고 이 지점으로부터 월산큰스님의 불국사 선원 불사와 운영의 의미를 명확히 짚을 수 있다고 생각되기 때문이다. 불국선원은 짧은 역사에도 불구하고 범룡스님, 송담스님, 일타스님, 정일스님, 혜정 스님 등 여러 명안종사가 거쳐 가면서 선풍을 떨쳤다. 무엇보다 경허 만공 보월 금오스님으로 이어지는 덕숭선맥을 이은 월산스님의 지도와 가르침으로 불국선원은 일시에 번성기에 들었다. 선원이 짧은 기간에도 불구하고 안착한 것은 무엇보다도 불국선원의 조실로서 바깥살림보다 안살림에 치중했던, 그랬기에 찾아드는 납자들의 제접에 소홀하지 않았던 월산스님의 원력이 작용한 결과로 볼 수 있을 것이다.
Bulguksa Temple has changed into what we can see today through the restoration between May 1969 and July 1973. However, if one wants to recognize Bulguksa as one of the representative temples of modern Korean Buddhism -- not as a temple representing the Buddhist culture of Silla, one needs to pay attention to establishing and developing process of the Seon Center of the Bulguksa Temple. And it is necessary to understand Ven. Wolsan who worked hard to open the center and teach monks, and know the characteristics of the center. Taking note of this point, this paper expounded that the ‘Bulguksa Restoration Project’ and ‘Establishing and Operating the Center’ were based on different historical and cultural backgrounds. It is noted that the ideological foundation for establishing the Center was different from that for constructing the Temple, from the time of founding the Temple to the restoration completed in 1973. And this point, the meaning of Ven. Wolsan’s establishing and operating the Center is clearly able to be understood. Despite its short history, the Seon Center was sensational and famous owing to many great masters like Ven. Beomryong, Ven. Songdam, Ven. Il-ta, Ven. Jeong-il, and Ven. Hyejeong. Most of all, the Cenetr began to flourish thanks to the guidance and teachings of Ven. Wolsan who following the Mt. Deoksung Linage that led from Ven. Gyong-heo to Ven. Man-gong, Ven. Bo-wol, and Ven, Geumo. The Center’s settling in spite of a short period of time could be seen as the result of a guiding teacher of the Center, Ven. Wolsan’s efforts to focus on teaching monks. |
