| 抄録 | 이 논문은 숲속수행 전통이 스리랑카의 불교개혁운동에 기여한 바를 살펴보고, 그 바람직한 미래상을 제시한다. 스리랑카의 숲속수행 전통은 붓다의 시대까지 거슬러 올라가지만, 서기 6세기나 7세기에 비로소 독자적인 그룹으로서 언급되기 시작한다. 숲속 승려들은 『쭐라왐사(Cūḷavaṃsa)』의 저자에 의해 크게 칭송되며, 왕실의 열렬한 후원을 받았다. 숲속 승려들의 성장과 인기는 그 당시 세속화된 교단에 대한 반작용을 반영할 것이다. 빠라끄라마바후 1세(Parākramabāhu I)는 마하위하라(Mahāvihāra)에 속한 딤불라갈라(Dimbulāgala)의 숲속 승려들의 지도자인 마하깟사빠(Mahākassapa)의 지도로 승가정화를 시작한다. 이는 아마도 왕이 숲속 승려들이 종교생활의 이상에 가장 가까운 승려라고 생각하였기 때문이었을 것이다. 18세기 왈리위따 사라난까라(Vӓliviṭa Saraṇaṃkara)의 실라왓 사마가마(Silavat Sāmagama)는 숲속수행 전통의 생명력과 역동성을 알리는 신호였다. 그는 율장의 규정들에 대한 엄수와 두타행(頭陀行, dutaṅga)에 대한 강조를 통해서 전 생애에 걸쳐 숲속 승려의 이상을 추구하였다. 19세기에 설립된 아마라푸라 니까야(Amarapura Nikāya)와 라만냐 니까야(Rāmañña Nikāya)는 율장의 규정들에 대한 엄수로 돌아갈 것을 호소하였고 숲속수행 전통의 신앙심과 수행에 새로운 활력을 주었다. 이와 같이 숲속 승려들과 숲속 승려들의 이상에 공감하는 승려들은 교단이 세속화되었을 때 초기불교의 이상으로 돌아갈 것을 주장하면서, 과감히 불교개혁에 뛰어들었다. 숲속 승려가 초기불교의 이상적 승려상으로 계속해서 간주되는 한, 스리랑카 불교의 미래는 어둡지 않다. 왜냐하면, 스리랑카 불교의 한 특징인, 주기적으로 초기불교의 숲속수행 이상을 재확립하고자 하는 시도가 앞으로도 계속될 것이기 때문이다.
The present paper examines how forest monk tradition contributed to the Buddhist reform movements in Sri Lanka and presents its future vision. Sri Lanka’s forest monk tradition can be date back to the time of the Buddha, but it is from about 6th or 7th century A.C., that forest monks (araññaka) are referred to as a distinctive group. They were held in very high esteem by the author of the Cūḷavaṃsa, and benefited from the zealous patronage of Sinhalsese kings. The growth and popularity of forest monks may reflect a reaction to te secularized saṅgha in those days. King Parākramabāhu I led the monastic reforms under the leadership of Mahākassapa, a leader of araññakas from Dimbulāgala belongs to the Mahāvihāra fraternity. It is quite likely that to the king the araññaka represents the closest approximation to the ideal of religious life. Silavat Sāmagama initiated by Vӓliviṭa Saraṇaṃkara during the eighteenth century was an another sign of the vitality of forest monk tradition on the island. He espoused early Buddhism’s ideal of forest-dwelling monk throughout his life by insisting on monastic discipline and austere practice (dutaṅga). Eighteen century’s two reformist fraternities, Amarapura Nikāya and Rāmañña Nikāya advocated a return to strict observance of the monastic discipline and helped revitalize the forest monk tradition of Buddhist piety and spiritual practice. In this way, the forest monks and monks who aspire early Buddhism’s ascetic ideal wield a strong influence on the monastic reform movements, claiming to be returning to the original Buddhism. As long as forest monks continued to be seen as exemplifying the paradigmatic ideal of striving to attain liberation, the future of Sri Lankan Buddhism will not be so pessimistic because the periodic attempt to re-establish early Buddhism’s ascetic ideal, which is one of the defining features of Sri Lankan Buddhism, will be countiued. |
