| 抄録 | 선시란 한 선사의 투철한 오도의 경계와 그 선사상이 집약된 깨달음의 노래다. 그러므로 선시독법의 완성은 바로 그 선사의 선사상과 오도의 경계를 얼마나 명확히 요해하고 갈파했는가에 달려있다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 선시 최종의 목적은 우리의 고정관념과 무명에 가려진 아견(我見)을 혁파하는데 있는 것이지 언어나 내용 자체의 파격을 위한 파격, 혹은 새로움을 위한 새로움 찾기에 있는 건 아니다. 실로 선시를 통해 선사들이 우리들에게 전하고자 하는 것은 ‘진리의 소식’, ‘진리의 가르침’이며, 이를 통해 우리가 득해야 할 것은 세세생생 무명으로 이어져 온 우리들의 지독한 ‘편견’과 ‘고정관념’에서의 탈피다. 따라서 아무리 파격적이고 선의 정취가 물씬 풍기는 ‘시의 옷’을 입고 있다 하더라도 그 속에 제행무상(諸行無常)·제법무아(諸法無我)·일체개공(一切皆空)의 깨달음이 바탕 되어 있지 않다면 엄혹한 의미에서의 선시라 하긴 어렵다. 실로 파격과 비파격의 양변을 모두 수용하되, 동시에 이 모두를 뛰어넘는 무상무주(無相無住)의 백척간두에서 무형의 꽃 아닌 꽃으로 꽃피는 것이 선시이기 때문이다. 결국 우리가 게송에서 얻어야 할 궁극의 것은 시적 아름다움이나 문학적 창조성만이 아니라 그 속의 진리개념이다. 비록 ‘문학’이라는 카테고리를 씌어 그 속에서 제아무리 뛰어난 문학적 아름다움과 성취를 찾는다 하더라도, 선시가 전하려는 진리에 먼저 계합하지 못한다면 선가에서 오랫동안 깨달음의 한 방편으로 사용되어왔던 선시 본연의 개념이 그 존재의의를 상실할 수도 있기 때문이다.
Seon poems are songs enlightenment. They express the worlds of enlightenment experience and doctrines of the Seon masters who wrote them. Proper appreciation of a Seon poem is thus possible only when the author’s enlightenment experience and his/her doctrines implied in it are fully read and understood. Seon poetry is often characterized by its unique rhetorics of strangeness, direct pointing and disruption. The Seon poetics seems to pursue what is ever beyond all precedents and frameworks. It itself, however, is not the purpose of Seon poetry to destroy or go beyond all precedents and existing frames. It rather aims ultimately to rectify the false idea of “self” that is created by our preconceptions and ignorance. What the Seon masters intend to communicate to us via their poems is so-called “the news of truth” or “the teachings of truth.” They expect their poetry may help us to overcome the prejudices and preconceptions that we have built up through innumerable lives in the wake of samsara. The very basis of their poetry is their enlightenment to the Buddhist truths, as stated in terms of the doctrines of impermanence, non-self and emptiness, rather than characteristic rhetorics or so-called Zen flavor. Only those poems that are based upon Seon enlightenment, therefore, can be regarded as Seon poems. The author of a Seon poem is an enlightened master, and the primary essence of Seon poetry is not in its poetics but in Zen. Readers may seek for its beauty and significance as a literary work. The raison d’etre of Zen poetry, however, is that it is an upaya for the authors’ enlightened spirit. A Seon poem cannot be properly appreciated unless the truth and the enlightenment experience it intends to express are prized. |
