| 抄録 | 한 인물에 대한 연구에서 생몰년에 대한 비정은 가장 기초이자 핵심이 되는 부분이다. 그러나 자장은 신라상대에서 중대로 이행하는 중요한 인물임에도 불구하고, 지금까지 뚜렷한 생몰연대에 대한 연구가 이루어지지 않았다. 자장의 중요도는 신라의 삼국통일 및 김춘추에 의한 중대왕실의 전개, 그리고 원효와 의상이라는 한국불교를 대표하는 고승들의 출현과 폭넓게 관련된다. 이로 인하여 자장에 관한 선행연구는 대략 70종에 이른다. 그럼에도 대다수의 연구는, 자장의 생몰년에 관한 부분을 생략하고 본 연구로 곧장 들어가고 있다. 또 일부 연구들은 자장의 생몰년을 비정하지만, 서로 다른 제각각 이어서 통일성을 확보하지 못하고 있는 상황이다. 현재까지의 자장의 생몰년에 관한 선행연구들을 통해서 검토되는 자장의 연대는, 576년부터 676년까지에 이르는 약 100년이다. 자장이 삼국시대 인물이라는 점을 감안한다면, 이와 같은 생애 폭은 일견 적은 것일 수도 있다. 그러나 자장의 중요도를 고려한다면, 또한 이러한 생몰년 폭은 너무 큰 것 역시 사실이다. 본고에서는 자장의 생몰년과 관련된 선행연구와 1차 자료를 바탕으로, 자장의 활동연대와 주변상황을 검토해서 이와 같은 연대의 범위를 축소해보고자 하였다. 이렇게 해서 도출되는 결과가 바로 594∼599년에서 653∼655년이며, 자장은 대략 50대 중반에서 60세 정도를 산 정도가 된다.
In the study of a person, the determination of his/her birth and death years is the most basic and essential part. But, in case of Jajang, though he was a very important person who played a leading role in the transition of Silla from old age to middle age, there have been few studies about his birth and death years. Jajang`s significance is widely connected with Silla`s unification of Korean three kingdoms, the development of middle-age royal family by Kim Chunchu, and the advent of Korean typical Buddhist masters such as Wonhyo and Euisang. Because of this, there have been about 70 precedent studies about Jajang. Despite it, most of the studies omit the part on his birth/death years but just enter directly his main works. Though some studies mention Jajang`s birth/death years, they are different without any unification. Up to now, the life period of Jajang suggested by precedent studies is about 100 years from 576 to 676. When considering Jajang was a man in three kingdom age, this life period might be rather short. But, when Jajang`s significance is considered, this span for his birth and death years seems too broad. In this paper, Jajang`s activity ages and surrounding situation were reviewed through the precedent studies about Jajang`s birth/death years and other 1st materials to reduce his life period. As a result, it was found that he was born in 594∼599 and died in 653∼655. Thus, Jajang died in his middle fifties or sixties. |
