| 抄録 | 붇다의 일대기에 대한 전승을 전하는 문헌들에서 특징적인 점은 붇다의 유년시절에 대한 서술에서 불교사적으로 의미가 큰 두 사건들, 즉 “사문유관”(四門遊觀)이라고 불리는 사건과 “초선”(初禪 prathama dhynam)이라는 사건이 결합되고 유기적인 일체가 되어 나타나지 않는다는 것이다. 특히 초선에 대한 전승들이 보여주는 내용의 편차는 아주 크다. 본 논문에서 필자는 초선이라는 사건과 사문유관의 사건이 그 발생사적인 출발점에서 근본적인 차이를 가지고 있음을 밝힌다. 즉 사문유관은 설화적인 요소가 강한 반면, 초선에 대한 서술은 설화적이라기보다는 역사적인 사건이었던 것이다. 하지만 Majjhimanikya에 나타난 것과 같은 ‘초선의 회상’이라는 경험이 갖는 구조적인 이중성에 주목해야 한다. 이러한 구조적인 정확한 이해가 전제되어야만 후대 여러 불교문헌들에 나타나는 초선의 경험에 대한 판연하게 다른 서술들이 모두 연관된 역사적인 흐름 안에 놓여 있으며, 시대와 전통에 따른 붇다에 대한 이해 그리고 해탈에 대한 이해의 변화를 나타내는 것들임을 이해할 수 있다.
The descriptions of the life of the historical Buddha preserved in numerous texts show a peculiar feature: the two significant events, namely "Four Doors' Encounter" and "The First Meditation" are not, at least for the later Buddhists, harmoniously united in the whole story of the life of the historical Buddha. Especially the transmitted stories of "The First Meditation" show very divergent contents and structures. In this article it is attempted to demonstrate that the historical origins of these two stories are totally different. The "Four Doors' Encounter" comes from the narrative elements fitted to the later standards of the Buddhist teachings rather than from the historical elements. In contrast, the stories concerning "The First Meditation" seem to stem from the historical reports of the historical Buddha (for example, those reported in Majjhimanikāya I 246f.) about how he has come to change the methods to reach his Enlightenment. Furthermore, the attention should be paid to the structural peculiarity of the story of "The First Meditation." The historical starting point of the whole event is a recollection of the Buddha of his experience in his childhood. As a recollection, this story has two time-references from the beginning, and this fact can explain the formation of the divergent versions transmitted in numerous texts. |
