| 抄録 | 본고는 카비야(kāvya, 산스크리트어로 작성된 정형시) 작품 『『사운다라난다』(Saundarananda, ‘아름다운 난다’ 이하 SN)를 통해 수사론서가 제작되기 전 초기 수사법의 특성에 대해 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. SN은 아쉬바고샤(Aśvaghoṣa, 馬鳴, 80~150년 경)의 저작으로서, 붓다의 이복동생이자 주인공 난다(Nanda)가 승려로 출가하여 해탈하기까지의 여정을 담고 있다. 해당 작품은 인도 불교사와 문학사에서 중요한 위치를 점하고 있지만, 후반의 수행론을 중심으로 저자의 사상에 대한 연구는 상당 부분 이루어진 반면, 문학적 연구는 상대적으로 적은 편이며, 작품의 명성과 연구사에 비해 국내 학계에서는 아직 작품 자체에 대한 독립 연구가 없을 정도로 부족한 상태이다. 이에 따라 본고는 SN의 문학적 연구 저변을 넓히기 위한 초석으로서, SN의 수사법에 대해 고찰하고자 한다. 문헌의 형성 시기를 고려하여 수사론의 형성기를 담당하는 연극론 문헌 『나티야 샤스트라』(Nāṭya-śāstra)의 이론을 바탕으로 SN의 수사법 적용례를 분석함으로써, 고전기 이전 초기 카비야의 수사법이 지닌 특성에 대해 알아본다.
Classical Sanskrit poetics (kāvya) recommends applying and using various rhetorical methods or figures of speech (alaṃkāra) concerning the use of poetic language. As the poets have applied various literary devices according to the theories of kāvya-śāstras, a proper understanding of the application of alaṃkāras helps the reader not only to understand rich hints about suggestive allusions under the surface but also to enhance the aesthetic appreciation of the well-arranged or decorated expressions. Even though the alaṃkāras as literary devices have been theoretically established by various scholars for a long time, these are not only left as a theory but are found as practical techniques for versificational usage. Moreover, even before they are systematically organized, still poets in early ages used it skillfully, just as represented in the early kāvya literary works such as the Saundarananda (SN) of Aśvaghoṣa. This paper aims to analyze some examples of alaṃkāras of early age used in the SN based on the classification of alaṃkāras in the Nāṭyaśāstra (NŚ) of Bharata muni. In the second chapter, I introduce the brief plot of SN with the information of the author and the previous researches as well to understand the background of this piece of work. In the third chapter, I outline the classification of the alaṃkāras stated in the NŚ as a tool for analyzing the verses. This process lets us figure out some archaic features of kāvya as the SN shows the early characteristics of alaṃkāra usages. I would like to consider how those alaṃkāras have been applied practically through citations and analysis of the selected verses from the SN.
