抄録 | As an important crossroad in the Maritime Silk Trade Route, the Peninsula Malaya was a place of magnetizing the world religions through the visiting of migrants, traders, and missionaries from the East and West. Archeological discovery of Buddha, Avalokiteśvara, and Bodhisattva statues showed the influence of Buddhism has been stretched to this land back to the 1st century. The openness in receiving multiple sources of religious flow has vital consequences for the next wave of landing and propagating of Buddhism in the 19th century. In this paper, I will trace the two routes of transnational connections that linked the Buddhist modernism from the larger Buddhist world to Peninsula Malaya since colonial times. The first trail is from the Buddhist world of Theravada traditions in South and Southeast Asia; the second trail is the Mahayana Buddhism from China. These two origin groups have first built their own religious community and later cooperated in the making of Buddhist modernism that assisted the religious traffic between the host and new frontier, and also among themselves. Imagine there is a religious broadband network and conduit that knotted, intertwined, contended and mutual benefitted in sharing their hardware and software. By looking at this religious corridor of transnational connections, I intend to lay down the historical background of Buddhist modernism consciousness in Malaysia that happened concurrently with the responses towards colonialism and modernity in the larger Buddhist world.
